The number of total GOPer voters in this primary declined by 161k compared to 2022.
Whereas the number of total Democratic voters in this primary more than DOUBLED by way of over 196k votes compared to 2022, and Doug Jones won't have to deal with a runoff election.
So for those acting deflated about the Alabama governors race I would like to quote Cher from Moonstruck and say...

(797 posts)They cant win with just their crazy base. If we get out and vote we win. Also, the supporters of the Republican losers may decide to stay home on Election Day rather than vote MAGAt

(4,194 posts)Yesterday, Trump backed candidates may fare well in the primaries, but they might just be a tad too radical to win a general election. And that doesnt count some skeletons these Trump boot lickers have that may suddenly appear before November.

(11,218 posts)I certainly hope so. I've been an Alabamian for 55 years and have seen this state decline steadily - and we started pretty low back in the 60s and 70s! I'll say this - it is tough to catch lightning in a bottle and it is exponentially harder to do it twice. Doug caught lightning when he beat Roy Moore. That was when Alabamians didn't like pedophiles. Tubby is a big, dumb, Trumpy jock who wants everyone to call him Coach. Want a maroon. But Tubby tells people that the damn liberals are evil and he will protect Alabama from far leftists. He tells us that there is no place in Alabama for Muslims or non-Christians. He tells us that Trump and he are one and the same.
Alabama hears that and LOVES it.
They feel that Doug is one of those damn woke Dems and he ain't a real christian like Coach. In November one head to head poll had Tubby up 19 points over Doug. I'm sure that margin has decreased but still a helluva climb.
I'll fight like hell for Doug and will continue to support him monetarily and with my vote. I just have no faith in the people of my state. We are a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, scared state. We have a brain drain going on in the state as well which is taking blue votes away.
We have an estimated 55% of voters identifying as Republicans, 36% Dems, and 9% Independents. Even if all independents roll our way we would need an over 5% swing in republicans to move over to us - or have a lot of republicans stay at home.
I just can't see that second lightning strike getting caught but we will fight like hell to try to make it so.

(13,914 posts)I'm in a very deep red county (only 10% voted Democratic), I was seriously thinking about not even wasting my time to vote in the primary yesterday but decided that if nothing else I'd help out the statistics for Democrats.
The old bitty who was checking in voters looked at my wife and me like we were green Martians when we said we wanted a Democratic ballot.
Also, and it's been like this at my polling place since I moved here, there are no voting "booths". You just sit at a table with other people around you and fill in your ballot. I'm not sure if that's even legal but I can see why they'd want to keep it this way, it's easy for Bubba to make sure his wife doesn't vote for some librul.

(11,218 posts)I was in Jeff Co forever so it was no big deal to be a Dem. Recently moved to Shelby and yesterday was my first time to vote in my new voting place. I made a point of loudly saying "DEMOCRAT PLEASE". They printed off the slip and the guy said "well you are number 2!". It was 9:30 lol.
Roll Tide, y'all.

(4,174 posts)However Im a Mississippi native, wife is an Alabama girl. We left our respective homes over 60 years ago each and have not looked back.
Her Alabama family all live, think, and act same as they did in the 1950s. My MS cousins are the same only worse.
We know Doug Jones through our DC attorney daughter and are contributing to his campaign.
We hope u r right but . . . its still Alabama. And Mississippi.

(877 posts)and the GOP won't change their policies and will continue to drive the world and U.S. economy into a ditch, causing some degree of increased pain and suffering for the bottom 90% from now until then.
The good news is that because of that, his poll numbers will continue to slide, so that by November him and the GOP will be even LESS popular than now. Even a few of the hard core MAGA cult members will turn on him.
Election prognosticators make their predictions based on today's polls, but the polls will be different (worse for Trump and the GOP) six months from now, given the current unstoppable trends.

(42,425 posts)However, he's much more concerned with the Senate and House races where seats might really flip to D. Losing support in Congress affects HIM personally, and he's going to go all out to keep as many red seats as he can. For that reason maybe he'll let Tuberville fight it out on his own.
Doug Jones has a really good chance to pull this out, if Tuberville messes up badly enough. Alabama Democrats, don't give up. Just work hard and Get Out The Vote! Doug Jones deserves your support. How anyone can say his name in the same breath as Tommy Tuberville is BEYOND ME!

(22,742 posts)Glad someone down there still has it. I gave up on my native Tennessee ages ago, and left them to the demons that possess them. Only returning for funerals which are getting quite rate these days. Sad that TN was once a state of moderation and practicality. The days of Ned McWherter and Howard Baker are long gone. Now it's the land of lunatics like Andy Ogles and the wicked witch of Williamson County, Marsha Blackburn. I despise the very ground that wench walks on.
