NJ-07: Bennett (D) posts big lead in her internal poll
Rebecca Bennett has been widely seen as the Democratic frontrunner for New Jerseys 7th congressional district for several months, and Bennetts campaign is now releasing polling data to back that up.
In an internal poll of 400 likely Democratic primary voters conducted last week by Impact Research, Bennett earned 36% of the vote well above her nearest competitor, Tina Shah, who got 15%. Brian Varela and Michael Roth were just behind Shah at 13% and 12%, respectively, while 22% of voters said they were undecided.
Former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett has a wide lead over the field and has the momentum to win the nomination in June and flip this seat for Democrats, the polling memo states. The 7th district, currently held by Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), is considered to be one of the most competitive districts in the country.
According to the poll, Bennetts edge is not primarily a product of name advantage, since similar percentages of voters said theyd heard of her (67%), Shah (65%), and Varela (58%); Roth, the least-well-funded candidate in the field, lagged behind at 42%. Those name ID numbers could theoretically give all four candidates further room to improve, though theres only two weeks left until Election Day and many voters have already cast their votes via mail-in ballots.
