Trump’s “Anti-Weaponization Fund” isn’t just a payout to his supporters — it’s a loophole that could lead to a complete subversion of the Constitution.
This slush fund will reportedly dole out reparations payments, all out of taxpayer money, for conservative supporters of the president who claim to have faced government persecution, including Jan. 6 insurrectionists, as Blanche admitted to Congress on Tuesday, with no public explanation or transparency. The fund will be overseen by a five-member board that is yet to be appointed. Save for the president, his son and their company, none of the potential recipients of the money that Blanche claims to be a settlement were a party to the original case.
It’s important to zoom out and see this for what it is at a governance level. The Trump administration is, out of thin air, authorizing a policy of government support for Trump’s own political movement, ahead of a hotly contested midterm election. This funding of the MAGA faithful particularly benefits those who engaged in physical violence, including militant groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who were prosecuted for seditious conspiracy following Jan. 6, and those who broke the law or used legal chicanery to try to steal elections.
