(27,751 posts)The regimes line was that he was only brought back to the U.S. to face charges. Now that those charges have been dismissed, whats to keep DHS from simply sending him back to CECOT?

(14,520 posts)The wheels of justice are too f-ing slow. It seems to me the fact this was a vindictive prosecution was obvious from the day the charges were made public. Utter bullshit from start to finish.
I can't help but fear for the fates of the 250 or so who were "released" from El Salvador to the country they originally fled.
Found this one bit of good news:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/may/22/venezuelan-makeup-artist-cecot-spain-asylum
Andry José Hernández Romero was deported from the US to El Salvadors notorious Cecot prison before he was allowed to return to Venezuela
After torture at Cecot... no words.
I would love it if someone like Tom Steyer would finance a documentary to follow up on this group of people targeted, rounded up, and flown off in violation of court orders to be abused at CECOT in a corrupt and unconstitutional "deal" with El Salvador. The horror of this particular evil perpetrated in our name can't be allowed to fade into the background of the firehouse of shit.
Perhaps the worst is knowing that thousands of others who have been similarly targeted without rationale (beyond meeting a vile "quota" ) are suffering in hellish concentration camps inside our own borders right now.

anyone who stands against the purported department of justice will have to endure tortuous litigation.

Well...knock off, say, $5000 from it. They've gotta have enough money to build a row of pillories on the National Mall for Trump and his minions.

Court dismisses indictment of Abrego Garcia (an exceedingly rare outcome in a criminal case).
Finding of vindictive prosecution and "an abuse of prosecuting power."
The opinion name checks Blanche nearly 30 times.

The Trump administration had resisted remedying that illegal removal for months before it finally brought him back in June 2025 to the United States, where it had criminal charges waiting for him.
The objective evidence here shows that, absent Abregos successful lawsuit challenging his removal to El Salvador, the Government would not have brought this prosecution, U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw wrote in his rare grant of such a motion, which the judge said he didnt do lightly.
Vindictive prosecution motions are rarely granted but have been brought by several defendants targeted by the administration in President Donald Trumps revenge-themed second term.....
The Executive Branch closed its investigation on the November 2022 traffic stop, Crenshaw wrote Friday, adding, Only after Abrego succeeded in vindicating his rights did the Executive Branch reopen that investigation.
In his ruling, the judge referred to acting Attorney General Todd Blanches investigation as tainted. Crenshaw wrote that instead of investigating the November 2022 traffic stop to identify who was responsible for the human smuggling, Blanche started the investigation to implicate Abrego. He did so to justify the Executive Branchs decision to remove him to El Salvador.
Abregos illegal removal and the prolonged fight over his return drew widespread attention last year.
I believe that Blanche will face disbarment due to this and other actions.

What led to the dismissal of Kilmar Abrego Garcia's indictment?
As I told autocracy scholar @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social, "Todd Blanche shot his mouth off on Fox." His disastrous interview opened the door to Abrego obtaining the evidence to prove vindictive prosecution buff.ly/BATf3Hb

My first year Contracts professor told us the number one reason people get in legal trouble is because they talk too god damn much. This is most valuable law school teaching ever.
