He or she approaches you and asks, "How did America allow that to happen?"

What will your response be?

1. I won't pretend to understand it

I'll just say not everyone was for it.

3. Well, I probably won't have to, but I would refer to it as our "Period of Intense Shame'

and describe the similarities with 1930s Germany and the rise of Hitler. But, my children would learn history from the cradle, so I doubt anything I had to say would add too much to their understanding from prior discussions.
