Donald Trump's lawless and corrupt regime dealt three big defeats in federal court as May 2026 draws to a close

The rule of law still matters in America, and the Constitution is not a scrap of paper that wannabe authoritarians can ignore. That was the message that a trio of federal judges collectively delivered today as they dealt Donald Trump’s corrupt regime three big defeats in court, upholding the law in a series of victories for the American people. Their rulings won’t be the final word on any of these matters, but their willingness to defy the regime shows that our system of checks and balances isn’t dead yet.

First, Judge Kathleen M. Williams in Miami reopened Trump’s fraudulent “$10 billion” case against the Internal Revenue Service, a scheme intended to once again enrich Trump at American taxpayers’ expense, with The New York Times noting:

After the president withdrew the suit, senior department officials released a pair of extraordinary agreements that settled the case by establishing a $1.8 billion fund to compensate people who claimed they were victims of government “weaponization” by Democrats.

The deal also conferred lucrative tax benefits on Mr. Trump, his family and his businesses.
