'I'm not a kingmaker': Hasan Piker grapples with limits of his influence

Popular socialist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker erupted in excitement to his thousands of live viewers Tuesday night, declaring as the race for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District was called, “It’s over! Adam Hamawy! Hamawy-mentum. Let’s fucking go! Read it and weep. First W of the night!” It would be his last of the night.

Piker had campaigned hard for Hamawy in the final weeks of the race, hosting the retired U.S. Army combat surgeon and staunch Israel critic on multiple streams and appearing alongside him on the campaign trail in New Jersey. Hamawy’s win gives Piker, one of the most sought-after political surrogates on the far left, another example to point to that his efforts can help push candidates over the line.

But the three candidates he pushed in his home state of California all underperformed and lost their races, revealing some of the streamer’s limitations as he looks to position himself as a new force in Democratic politics by working to convert his engaged online audience into wins for progressive and socialist candidates.....

“A lot of people think I’m some kingmaker,” a groggy Piker said in an interview Wednesday morning, after streaming for over 10 hours on Tuesday until 11 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and getting just four hours of sleep. “But I’m not a kingmaker — and I’m very clear about that.”

A LOT of voters think of him as a "blogger or whatever" IF they know about him at all. He's a guy with fairly big online presence, but my impression is that he is also a polarizing figure for those who know who he is.

Not all are good or right, or particularly palatable. Did he say it? Yes. Was it wrong? Yes. Does he know that? Yes. Did he mean what people choose to think he meant? Probably not. Does he repeat it or continue to say it? No.

How many times does one need to make such a comment before you realize they’re a terrible human being?

"Kaya, place!" ⚡️⚡️

He's gross and unprincipled, IMO.

Hasan says he does not use a shock collar. Others say he does. That one, I didn't delve too deeply into. I know the internet did. As far as I can see, Kaya is a well cared for and well adjusted dog. You believe one thing. I don't. Neither of us can say with 100% surety.

Whatever problems one has with the current Israeli government (and I think people should), Piker crosses over into antisemitism.

He has his eyes set on the 2028 Democratic primary which he no doubt plans to do his part in making as toxic and divisive as possible. His strategy will probably center on leveraging the I/P conflict if I were betting.
