Jun 10, 2026
Connecticut's new homeschooling law asks parents to fill out a simple form and says adults under investigation for child abuse or neglect can't suddenly pull their kids out of school while those allegations are being examined.
Any reasonable person would see that as basic child protection. But Republican lawmakers, Christian homeschooling activists, and conservative groups have launched a full-scale panic campaign, claiming the law is an assault on parental rights.
In reality, the legislation was prompted by horrific cases involving homeschooled children and closes a loophole that allowed vulnerable kids to disappear from public view.

(10,718 posts)1. There are several states where there is no oversight
whatsoever over homeschooled kids. While some parents are perfectly able to teach their kids at home, when I see barely literate folks saying they're going to homeschool their kids it's pretty clear that they're just perpetuating the cycle of uneducated people that trump loves. In my opinion, depriving your child of a decent education is another form of child abuse.

(25,903 posts)3. I have a teacher friend. She says this is common among "at risk" kids.
She said that if you meet with the parents to discuss a student's behavior issues, some parents react angrily and simply pull their kids out of school to "homeschool" them.
