President Donald Trump declared an end to his campaign against Irans leaders with an exhortation on Sunday: Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!
With the Iranian regime still in place, he was celebrating a resumption of the way the world was on Feb. 27, the day before the United States and Israel attacked Iran.
A return to a version of the status quo was a far cry from the original aims of a war effort that kicked off with a vow to come to the aid of the Iranian protesters who had taken to their nations streets to denounce their regime. Once strikes killed Irans supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, in the opening hours of the war, Trump told Iranians that the moment to seize back their nation had come.
An uprising never happened. In the nearly four months since, Iranian leaders demonstrated an ability to withstand withering attacks from the most powerful military in history, shut down the Strait of Hormuz, cripple global energy markets, and drive such a deep wedge between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. leader spent part of his 80th birthday Sunday cursing out his Israeli counterpart to journalists.

(24,521 posts)That's why Iran has been mostly left alone for decades.
Iran could not have dreamed of a better scenario. They showed they can stand up to the American military and their rockets can inflict damage on the entire region. I am sure that even those on Iran's side didn't really think their rockets could destroy US equipment and buildings at bases throughout the region. The damage the US military suffered was not covered in the US, but Iran was able to destroy dozens of builds and aircraft throughout the region. Thankfully, our safety procedures minimized the deaths of US personnel, but I think the entire thing was an eye opener to the world that the US is not invulnerable.
Iran has elevated their standing for the future, this was a great victory for those in power there in every way. They now have to be taken seriously when they threaten countries. The opposition in Iran no longer has any power, they united behind the regime when they were attacked. The Strait is now going to be used whenever Iran wants something and I do believe some kind of toll will be in place. Their nuclear program will continue completely unchecked now. The leaders who were killed were replaced by hard liners. And they're extracting $10s of millions to rebuild their military arsenal.
Because of this foolish war, Iran is going to be a bigger problem for the world from now on. Total US failure.

Wonder Why
(7,323 posts)that suffering. All those Iranians murdered by their own government who we didn't care about.
It was all trump's fault. Blame further accrues to the cowardice of our repug "leaders" and our Pentagon chickens.
A disgusting time in American history. He has made our country worthless, pathetic, immoral and cowardly just to satisfy his ego.
His worthless cult still believe in him.
The billionaires don't care because they make even more money from it.
Too many of the media ran away from their responsibility.
History will remember this shame for what it is.
But some stood up even if it didn't help - yet.
