Reminder: President Obama once wore a tan suit,
and the First Lady planted a vegetable garden
The Right went apoplectic in relentless outrage
I wish I could sit down with you face to face and explain why so many of us were offended by the UFC fight on the South Lawn of the White House.
For me, it had nothing to do with the UFC or who showed up for the fights. The brand you and Dana have built is a bona fide American success story. More power to you. As for the fighters, in my book, anyone brave enough to put it all on the line in the arena is remarkable to witness. Their dedication and discipline inspire me. I dont understand anyone who cant admire that.
And as for the people who attended, I, for one, love Shane Gillis. I think hes hilarious and brilliant. It was a show. A once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. I cant blame anyone for wanting to witness it firsthand.
My problem is that I believe some of our public spaces are sacred. And unlike many of the great powers that came before us, these American monuments belong to all of us. Not to whoever happens to hold power at the moment.
The White House does not belong to Donald Trump. It does not belong to any President. It belongs to the people. To treat it as Caesar treated the Colosseum is antithetical to everything our founding fathers fought for.
This is not Rome. Presidents are not emperors doling out bread and circuses for the peasants. The White House is the Peoples House. This celebration could have happened in any stadium within a stones throw of the South Lawn. No one would have had an issue with it.
But that was obviously Donald Trumps whole point. By holding the event on the South Lawn, what he was saying to the rest of us is:
This is my house. I own it. I will do with it what I please. Ill build a colosseum and have the gladiators fight under my gaze. Ill tear down the East Wing. Ill pave over the Rose Garden. Ill cover everything in gold and marble. Ill erase the names of all the men who came before me.
The fights were an exhibition of imperial domination, not a celebration of our 250th anniversary as a democracy.
The White House is not Buckingham Palace. It is not the Palace of Versailles. It is not the Forbidden City of Beijing. It does not belong to an emperor, or a king, or a commissar.
The White House belongs to us. All of us. The person who sits behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office is nothing more than an honored guest. A temporary caretaker.
The President is our servant. Not our Caesar.
Respectfully, Hunter
P.S. Cage match between me and Don Jr.? Your call on the venue. Anywhere but the South Lawn.

(56,399 posts)the way he addresses the right-wing whining is to explain, as one would to a child, the facts behind the outrage being felt by the public regardless of party.
Excellent rebuttal yet again.

(15,511 posts)They lost their bloody minds over countless stupid shit like the suit, a vegetable garden, his putting a basketball hoop up ... But, we are just a bunch of haters for all the crazy shit he is is doing to the place?
And, Hunter drills down on it accurately, its like a dog taking a piss on the neighbors mailbox to stake claim to it.

But good that Biden expresses how idiotic this all was.

(1,447 posts)With Trump seeing himself as the Mob Boss. But great description of how the event itself being held at the people's house demonstrated Trump's takeover and warping of America's democracy and it's institutions into his personal business to be run as unethically and un-American as Trump sees fit to do so.

(3,252 posts)He has come a rugged path in his life -- not that different from Bob Kennedy. But unlike Bob, Hunter is emerging as an improved person. I welcome his voice. He was a vehicle for great damage to our country. Now that he has a solid public voice, I hope this will cause some people to re-examine why they were so angry about Hunter in the past.
The American story is one of redemption, at least for most of us. Most of us do not believe that any noble goal is served when government executes criminals, even the worst among us. While we may not expect redemption from a serial rapist or murderer or sex trafficker, most of us do believe in humane treatment, and the hope that some measure of redemption is possible.
Hunter is on a remarkable path and I hope he continues speak, not as a political partisan, but as an advocate for decency , democracy, and doing the right things.

(5,000 posts)... asshole who thinks being offensive is his "brand". That he's gotten rich off it says nothing good about the judgement or character of those who listen to him. That there are so fucking many of them does not reflect well on America in the eyes of those in more civilized countries.
