Northern Oregon Coast

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Cannon Beach from Ecola State Park after a drive through an old growth Sitka spruce forest.

Looking down on Manzanita Beach from Neahkahnie Mountain

From Tillamook there is an hour long Three Cape Scenic drive of Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda.

Cape Meares Light House with an interpretive information, bird watching with volunteers, and the Octopus Tree a short walk away.

The small beach town of Oceanside is next with a tunnel thru the headland leading to a private beach

Next is Cape Kiwanda snd the little beach town of Pacific City.

I used to surf here in my mid-sixties, but age has thinned my blood. The sea water temperature here in July ranges between 48 and 55. Add some clouds and a little wind and it feels really cold. Hats off to the locals for braving it summer and winter.

Pacific City’s sea stack.
You can see grey whales here. Watch for their spout then train your binoculars on that location. Whale watching tours are offered just south of here at Depoe Bay.

This is why I moved to the Oregon coast. Best place in the world to live.

Captain Carrie Newell, a world-famous whale scientist runs a whale education center and whale watching cruises from Depoe Bay. Best tourist money I've ever spent.

They had wheel barrows to aid in getting your gear down to the cove and more importantly back up. Don't know if they still have them though. I am enjoying living your trip. Reminds me of so many good times.

Great pix of one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever visited. Cannon Beach is like going to another planet. Multnomah Falls, the Columbia River Gorge, and that whole area are some of my favorite vacation memories. I hope to make it out there again someday.

Pacific City is awesome.

A good day drive from PDX is

HWY26 to Cannon Beach for breakfast, then 101 down to Pacific City and the Pelican Pub for dinner after that HWY 6 back home or drive out on McPhillips Beach and camp.

when one finds out that these sea stacks are Columbia River Basalt which erupted 17 million years ago. The flow that formed the stacks poured out of fissures near Kalhotus Washington and flowed to the Oregon coast.
