Dog shaved like lion sparks 9-1-1 calls

A dog shaved like a lion made for an eventful night for Norfolk, Va., dispatchers, when several people who saw the dog on Tuesday called 9-1-1 to report a lion on the loose, the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot reports.

The newspaper obtained 9-1-1 call audio, in which one woman says, “There was a lion that ran across the street – a baby lion. It was about the size of a Labrador retriever.”

The dog’s owner, Daniel Painter, told the Virginian-Pilot that he shaved his pet to look like the mascot for Old Dominion University.

It's a cute little hair cut for a doggie. But on second glance, it's obvious he's not a lion.

This might not end well for the dog, regardless if someone thinks this dog is a lion or not.

When I had the border collie, I walked her on the leash to the park, but I didn't really need to, she always walked next to me, herding me to the park.

When we got there, if there were not a lot of people around, I let her of the leash and had her herd the Canadian geese out of the park. They really hated her, in a few weeks we had run out the geese, We maintained a watch to chase them when the returned. When there were no geese, we would go to our play date with another well trained dog. The dog responded to whistles - come, left, right, and free. I never trained her, she sort of trained herself, I used to work in the yard and let her wander around, she would go visit the neighbor on either side, but not wander any further off, although one day she did go to the park by herself, that was the one exception to the rule. We never figured out how she got out of the house since the doors were closed and she was inside a few minutes before.

But some very steady dogs can walk without a leash, don't know about labradoodles though they always seem too fun loving.

“I go to Old Dominion University and our mascot is a lion and we have a local zoo right here also,” Charles’ owner, Natalie Painter, told ABCNews.com. “He was just roaming around. He does his own thing a lot of the time. He visits the locals on the street and walks on the sidewalk shop to shop. He was walking around, and he does look a lot like a lion. So I guess some concerned citizens thought there was a lion.”

And it's pretty racially diverse.

I used to live a couple of blocks from Colley Avenue. This is a pretty progressive and hip area called 'Ghent'. And I used to volunteer at the Virginia Zoo, also near some pretty decent neighborhoods. These are not ignorant hicks since Norfolk tends to be Democratic.

Colley Avenue has a lot of bars and restaurants so I'm hoping alcohol was involved in the 911 calls.

Charles is cute as hell. He is a sweetie and a really good dog.
I still don't understand how anyone could mistake a dog for a lion.
