Do it preemptively. Why wait until the last minute? Mint the coin, get it over with. Tell the Repubs to go f themselves. Let the markets react, and let the FOX people complain, but then everyone will calm down and realize that the president is no longer going to let the GOP hold the world economy hostage in order to decimate the social safety net.

(2,715 posts)Mint 20 of these bad boys...
1.) Pay off the debt.
2.) REALLY have a stimulus program
3.) maybe buy off some lobbyists?
4.) Start an investment program in American Infrastructure
5.) (my fantasy) pay some one to follow Mitch and the-Orange-that-walks-like-a-man around, and randomly hit them with a rubber chicken.

(36,433 posts)Do you know what this country needs today?...A seven-cent nickel. Yessiree, we've been using the five-cent nickel in this country since 1492. Now that's pretty near a hundred years' daylight saving. Now, why not give the seven-cent nickel a chance? If that works out, next year we could have an eight-cent nickel. Think what that would mean. You could go to a newsstand, buy a three-cent newspaper and get the same nickel back again. One nickel carefully used would last a family a lifetime!
Somebody's gotta go back and get a shit-load of dimes!

(7 posts)Do you really believe it's that simple? They can just mint a coin, "say" it's worth a $1,000,000,000,000, and then we're Ok?
If it's really that simple, why are we paying taxes at all? Just pump a bunch of these coins out and pay off our national debt.
It would devalue our currency.

(20,709 posts)It's more "just throwing it out there", but it's not snark. I would rather see a platinum coin minted rather than giving concessions to the GOP in order to have them raise the debt ceiling. So why not do it preemptively rather than waiting until the last minute?

(20,709 posts)It's not about paying off our debt. It's about avoiding the debt ceiling. Read this Paul Krugman blog entry.

My apologies. You're right, it is about avoiding the debt ceiling (silly me thinking they'd actually try to lower the debt!! LOL)
But my points still stand...it's a lesson in economic ignorance to think that it'd work "just like that"...mint a coin and say it's worth a trillion.
Again, if that's the case, why do we need to pay taxes at all? Just mint about 20 of those bad boys and we'll be covered for a little while!

You spent a trillion dollars on a Snickers!?
Snickers is probably my favorite candy bar, but that would still be a major f&%Kup.
Thanks for the thread, DanTex.
