(25,699 posts)I'm afraid my cybernetic impants make me more than human... and yet... somehow less as well.
Oh well. At least I have eye-lasers and you don't.

(6,640 posts)for men to be fully human? Depends on how you define "be."

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: It's just a stupid post that should be ignored. I don't feel it's bad enough to be removed -- it's not vicious. I've seen worse. It's just a dumb post.

Proud to be the deciding vote to keep you trucking.

(11,804 posts)Of course it's possible for men to be fully human as it is for woman to be fully human. Frankly Men, particularly White Men, don't have to worry so much about being reduced to a category. But we are conditioned in certain ways, in the same way that everybody is conditioned. Some of that conditioning might be beneficial, and some of it is less beneficial.
But its' always best to be aware of your conditioning and prejudices rather than just sitting back and feeling sorry for yourself because some people don't like you calling yourself a feminist.

(80,708 posts)Bad rap with younger women because it is perceived (wrongly, we have been told) to mean something intolerant and non-inclusive, and something other than what I've always thought is the actual meaning, i,e. "supports equality for women".
If "Feminism" really is this inclusive term defined by the umbrella of "Supports equality for Women", then one would think that not only CAN Men be Feminist, but they should be, if they are decent human beings and not a-holes.
It's only in the last week or so that I've heard these sorts of proclamations about "Men, stay out of Feminism!"
Until recently, I was under the impression that it was a term we all should embrace, particularly to clear away the misconceptions that are causing young women, in large numbers, to reject the name.
Odd, to say the least.

Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Im sure he has choice words for liberal and progressive men, too, but honestly I don't give a shit what that asshole says.
But I thought you said men who self-identify as "Feminists" get some sort of benefit. Avoiding an insult aimed at someone else is not technically a benefit, particularly if they would have avoided the insult also had they not adopted the label at all.
leftstreet
(36,201 posts)That doesn't always happen for women
But I suspect you understand that - you're pretty smart
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Are you asserting that men only support equality to get back-pats? (Trust me, they're overrated)
Or should men NOT support equality?
Despite being a straight man, I support full equal rights for LGBT citizens. Now, thankfully, at least in my progressive circles, it is "cool" to do. Yet, I supported equal rights when it wasnt cool, too. I suppose I can feel a bit vindicated because I was ahead of my time. But whereas now maybe I get pats, in the old days I got funny looks (from the stupid ones, at least)... What's the difference?
We do what we believe is right. That's all we can do.

(36,201 posts)But I agree with you that some men are certainly calculating enough to adopt a faux feminist support schtick to get an ego erection out of it

(11,804 posts)That said spending some time trying to understand may make it seem less odd.
I think also there is a vector of what feminism is really about - is it about economic equality? Political equality? Representation equality? or is it about consciousness raising, interpersonal relationship equality, social equality?

(80,708 posts)Around their particular issue of interest.
For some it is meat eating, or animal rights, although we saw more of that in the old days. For some, it is the green party or the perceived inadequacies of the Democrtic Party.
For some, it is stuff like smoking bans.
Right now, for obvious reasons, DU is pretty focused on gun control. (And for other, pretty obvious reasons, there have been concerted efforts from some quarters to change the subject or otherwise ivert from gun control)
And for some people, it is gender.
I do not, however, see how telling men they cannot or should not label themselves as "Feminist", is helpful. But i m not going to assist in stoking a conflagration on the matter, so that's all I've got to say on it.

(36,877 posts)I try to avoid labeling myself as much as possible. I don't mind being called a Democrat, but I would never call myself a feminist, or even a meminist (totally made up word), or a MRA. While I wouldn't mind associating myself with the likes of Herb Goldberg (or Betty Friedan in the case of feminism), undoubtedly there are those who would pull the guilt by association card on the worst sort that call themselves that and I'd have even more men to carry on my back when discussing gender issues. Ironically these are the same people who refuse to carry the worst sort of feminists on their back, but still want to use the label as validation of their ideas without taking ownership of which feminist school of thought they subscribe.

(10,618 posts)If by "human" you mean the bad-ass hunters who brought home the meat in the stone age family unit, then ONLY men can be fully human.
If by "human" you mean the nurturing mothers who gathered plant foods and tended the young, then only women can be fully human.
If you mean the partnership that made human survival possible for hundreds of thousands of years in the midst of harsh post-ice age changing climate, then both are fully human.

(84,711 posts)vote in DU Poles because the Administrators used to BAN folks that answered polls on DU if they answered in a way that didn't support DU's Guidelines. The Guidelines are much more strict on DU-3...so you'll never see me answering any DU Poll (which are futile exercises, anyway) .......but, thought I would answer you ...that I am NOT married to one who is NOT"human." There ARE MALES who are NOT "Knuckle Draggers."
So. there it is. If you want to count me as one who isn't afflicted who may be a some unusual statistic.. Yes..I'm lucky and so is my partner. I think there are many of us...but, MSM doesn't want to talk about that.
