CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Investigators are working to determine if a shipment of 18 human heads intercepted by customs officials at O'Hare Airport are, in fact, legitimate medical specimens, authorities said Tuesday morning.

The heads, which was sent to Chicago from outside the U.S., were discovered Monday by U.S. Customs officials and appear to be medical samples at first blush, said Brian Bell, a Chicago-based spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security.

"There's no issue with the transportation of body parts for medical purposes," Bell said. "There's nothing against the law that says you cannot ship them, provided you have the right documentation."

While Bell said he has never before fielded questions about a large package of human body parts, such shipments are not without precedent, he noted.

Some shipments go by air, but others end up in delivery trucks just like any other package.

"In fact, we sent out a shipment of brains to the University of Texas at Austin last week via UPS," Dudek said.

"heirloom." My grandfather got back in dental school back in the WWI era. It got passed around and went to a few show and tells along the way.

When my grandfather passed away, my mother and sister went to Oklahoma for the funeral. Some people came by to pay their condolences. While they were visiting in the living room, it was either my sister or my cousin that walked through the living room with the skull. Noting the startled expressions, my grandmother just made the comment, "Oh that is just Poppo's skull." From what my mother stated years later, you should have seen the visitors' expressions at that point.

They had to explain that it was not really my grandfather's skull but one he got in dental school.

Last I knew my cousin had it, I don't know if he still does.

The transplant techs and nurses were interesting people but I didn't want to do what they did.

I shipped body parts through O'Hare quite a few time, but never entire heads.
