A chimpanzee at a Spanish zoo has become addicted to human porn.
Gina the chimp's habit began after having a television installed in her enclosure at Seville Zoo.
Primatologist Pablo Herreros told El Mundo: "To enliven Gina's nights, officials decided to install a Freeview television, protected behind glass, and gave her a remote control so she could change the channels herself.
"In the early trials, her keepers visited Gina to check that everything was in order and she did not break the new toy.
"The surprise came when they found that within a few days, Gina was not only using the remote control perfectly well, but that she also chose the porn channel for entertainment, as many of us would have done."

(9,002 posts)I'm sure its hard to find chimps who have never seen porn.
It isn't hard to find chimps who aren't in the habit of watching it for ethical reasons or otherwise.

(25 posts)Just for um... "comparative analysis" - yeah, that's it, that's the ticket.
But out of respect for female chimps out there, I've decided not to post it.

(151,269 posts)I've never seen any of that, but I'll bet that zoo chimp would prefer it over watching hairless apes have sex.

(2,252 posts)OK, I don't watch television, so I am hardly an expert on U.S. television content. I don't speak Spanish so I am doubly unqualified to discuss choices on Spanish television. I know nothing about Spanish porn channels. However, I won't let that stop me...
From Wikipedia:
Pornography generally involves two or more individual animals, small groups, or maybe 20 to occasionally 150 I suppose, engaging in a variety of energetic activities, so there are recognizable bipedal creatures, lots of motion, auditory content my include shouts, screams, grunting, and moaning, some speech that a zoo chimp might recognize. Lots of, uh, closeup photography that the chimp might or might not appreciate, but could be perceived as grooming. So, pretty much nonstop social behavior.
Car chases, soap operas, talk shows, cartoons, crime series, sitcoms, reality shows, etc. probably don't provide the same social ... that's sOCIal...stimulation. I bet the Spanish food channel undoubtedly covers fruit dishes, but probably doesn't do a lot of leaves, leaf buds, seeds, blossoms, stems, pith, bark and resin recipes. Seems like sports shows could be interesting.
Experimenting with chimpanzee television preferences seems like a good research project...at least for researchers who like a little porn in the mix. Or for budding filmmakers who see Chimp Porn as a possible way to grow the human market.

(38,213 posts)For a lot of TV a chimp just doesn't have the experience and context to follow what's going on. But this particular subject is basic enough that a chimp can "translate" a bit more easily.
I'm vaguely curious whether it's actually a chimpanzee, or a bonobo (for which intimate contact including sex is something of a social glue, moreso than for true chimpanzees).
