What's with people eating silver?

http://nccam.nih.gov/health/silver

Colloidal silver consists of tiny silver particles suspended in liquid. Scientific evidence does not support the use of colloidal silver to treat any disease, and serious, irreversible side effects can result from its use.

Colloidal silver products are often marketed as dietary supplements with various unproven health-related claims. This fact sheet provides a general overview of colloidal silver and suggests sources for additional information.
Alert from the FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not consider colloidal silver to be safe or effective for treating any disease or condition and has issued an advisory regarding its safety. Colloidal silver can cause serious side effects, such as argyria.
Key Points

Colloidal silver is not safe or effective for treating any disease or condition.
Colloidal silver can cause serious side effects. The most common is argyria, a bluish-gray discoloration of the skin, which is usually not treatable or reversible.
The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have taken action against a number of companies (including some companies that sell products over the Internet) for making drug-like claims about colloidal silver products.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

also sell colloidal silver products for you to take. The alternative health industry has lots of contradictions like that. Buyer beware with all health claims from internet websites. Just because a site says it's about "natural" products doesn't mean that its products are necessarily good for you. Lots of them simply aren't, or are useless.

Colloidal silver is a health fad of long-standing. It's bogus.

Together, they cost me $12/month. Cheaper than most supplements cost, and they work perfectly, with no side effects. They're important for my health.

You're saying stuff without any actual facts to support what you're saying. I take the medications prescribed by my doctor, because they work. There are no supplements that are calcium channel blockers or beta blockers. There are inexpensive generic pharmaceuticals that do both things. What would you suggest I do?

They have been using it since the beginning of time, just recently was discontinued
Historically "colloidal silver", a liquid suspension of microscopic silver particles, was ingested to treat a variety of diseases. Its use was largely discontinued in the 1940s, following the development of safer and more effective modern antibiotics

They still use it on burns in the hospital to prevent infection. It is used as a water preservative. It is used on medical equipment.

As more and more illnesses become resistant to antibiotics, more people are turning to this natural antibiotic.

A spray can be used on skin issues. Many people are getting MSRA which is resistant to regular antibiotics.

It is good as a mouthwash.

Just yesterday I found out it was a pain killer as well. I burned my arm, sprayed silver on it to prevent infection, and the pain went away for 20 minutes or so. I really couldn't believe it. I still don't understand how it managed to kill the pain.

And if you all really want to believe that US medicine is the best, that we are getting the best possible medical treatment know to mankind, that we are being told the truth about how to protect our health...well I will refer you to this popular thread...

" U.S. ranked near and at the bottom in almost every heath indicator. That stunned us."

THEY CAN'T MAKE ANY MONEY FOR DRUG COMPANIES! So, would be best to make it illegal. You don't have to buy it...you can make colloidal silver yourself very easily. Lots of instruction and demonstrations on You Tube. You can google for the many benefits. It is antibiotic....perfectly safe and natural. It's much better for a child's ear ache or infection that antibiotics which wears down the immune system.

Just because some idiot drinks so much that he turns blue...doesn't mean it's bad. If someone took too much of any drug...they'd be dead. Better blue than dead.

BUT...there is a certain dosage. If someone took it "like crazy" they'd probably be dead. So just because your family members had bad reactions from taking too much colloidal silver doesn't mean it's bad. I've only used it when I actually needed it and it worked great without the long list of side effects that every med has.

We all know that drug companies primary concern is profit...yet you trust them with your life. Not me! I'll go with the woo healthcare system any day of the week. I've only had two prescription drugs in my life over 20 years ago. Since then nothing except an advil once in a while. All natural remedies or vitamins. Even corrected early glaucoma with vitamins.

She religiously applied it every few hours.

Within two weeks, the horse had to be taken to the state university vet hospital to have his eye removed. And then he died during the surgery due to the stress. He had a heart attack.

I am not against 'natural' remedies, but when you realize that they aren't working, it's time to use regular old drugs to treat a problem.

there are a very, very, few, highly specialized cases where some very specific derivatives of gold or silver have proven to have beneficial medical effects. There is no historical or logical connection between these modern drugs and the supposedly magical intervention of the "noble metals" claimed in ancient apothecaries.

Mouthing silver helped babies survived, that's why babies used to be given silver rattles and silver spoons to suck on. Its also why silverwear used to be made from real silver. Silver disrupts bacteria cells permanently. Silver has been used to preserve food and water, it became popular in the Middle ages to protect against the plague. In the American west silver dollars were used in jugs of milk to prevent spoiling. Silver Nitrate drops are put in newborn babies eyes to prevent infection. The Silver Institute cites information from studies over decades at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons on the health benefits silver and they even say silver can heal wounds.
