Longtime no see DU: Your very own wndycty was on the BBC yesterday talking guns. . .

Sorry in advance for the self promotion:

I hope everyone is well. I just wanted to check in, say hi and share my appearance on the BBC from yesterday in which I was teamed with some right wing nut job to discuss guns:

Your point regarding their unwillingness to talk about what will work is spot on. There are murders everyday. Does that mean that we should not have laws against murder, because they don't stop all murder?

Good work!

She said, "Chicago has the highest murder rate."

No, New Orleans has the highest murder rate in the nation. They (and Detroit) have nearly three times the murder rate Chicago had last year. Chicago doesn't even come close to the highest murder rate. And that is using last year's fluke upturn.

Oh, and by the way, New Orleans has allowed Concealed Carry for a very long time now.

This is a big lie that I never see challenged. If you ever get a chance like this again, get the FBI stats for 2012 first and be prepared to rip them a new one!

Chicago doesn't even break into the top 5. Probably doesn't even break into the top 10. I tried to compile an exhaustive list, but found a disturbing trend.

I had no problem finding the number of murders in DC, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, or Boston.

I could not find any published number of homicides for Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, or Orlando.

Odd that.

The exact numbers are compiled by the city council's Public Safety Commission. We do have anomalies, but our police force appears to confirm the trend - we even went for almost an entire month without a single homicide back in 2009:

http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Dallas-Sees-Historic-Homicide-Free-23-Days-57940902.html

Not bad for a city of 1.5 million that has concealed-carry permits and more gun shows than you can count. This tells me we're doing something right. (And most of our county officials are Democrats. Dallas County is an oasis of purplish-blue in a sea of red.)

Not bad for a city of 2.7 million that has no carry permits and no legal handgun purchases since the 1960s. This means we're doing something right. And ALL of our county officials are Democrats. Chicago is an oasis of bright blue in a sea of purplish-red.

The shooter at the Gabby Giffords meet/greet was not taken down by armed resistance. The one guy who has been identified that was present, was inside the Walgreens when the shooting occurred. He couldn't see the shooting at all. By the time he got outside and could see the scene, the shooter was already down, someone was sitting on him, and someone else was holding the gun he used.

The THEN proceeded to order the guy holding the gun to drop it, and he did, and then he went in and helped sit on the shooter.

No one drew a gun in response, because there was no one there with a gun, apparently. The guy in the Walgreens might as well have been a hundred miles away, for all the relevance it had to the actual shooting.

It'd be like doing away with all DUI laws because it doesn't prevent all drunken driving.

Well, no, but you know what's happened since we've enforced stricter laws when it's come to driving inebriated?

Yup! Fewer and fewer accidents!

I wonder why?

I tried to tell you that the name alone was too close to the same for a person named Obama to ever be elected. But you wouldn't listen!

I've made the 911 comparison to gun nuts, too, it stops them for a sec at least. These folks are emotional thinkers, we just have to keep hammering.

"I think we just need more arms to protect ourselves" She thinks like a cartoon character.

Hey lady, I think we need to put all you gun nuts in one state and let you have at it. Leave the rest of us be.

Personally I am concerned about the large number of people who fatefully feel that nothing can be done about the unregulated firearm industry. Who feel the lobbyists with their bribes and threats to elected politicians have the upper hand. They feel terrible and actually suffer with a form of Post Traumatic Stress every time an incident like the Sandy Hook Massacre occurs. The laws can be changed. The mentally ill and career criminals can be prevented from obtaining guns. But people must wake up and line up their ducks. It is not a battle of semantics regarding words like assault or magazine or clip size. It is a situation that the founders of this Nation would frown at that we are putting ourselves through. Its frickin’ nuts that we don’t get control of this problem.
Study up on the history of the 2nd amendment and the history of the NRA. An honest study may change your paradigm. The Sandy Hook murderers Mother owned 3 guns, a lot of good it did for her.

From what I have read it took 20 min. for the police to respond to Sandy Hook. A single shot rifle could have done lots of damage to a no gun zone in 20 min.
The attack on guns is just that and attack on guns. We need to do something to stop these horrible crimes from happening. But it's not about the guns or the mags. It's about the people who do this.
Having a AWB and lower limits on mags won't do shit. Do you really think it matters what laws are in place for the lunatics?

No mag no assault weapon.
This guy can shoot 8 rounds in less than 5 seconds. that's 1,920 rounds in 20 min.
My point here is it's not the gun it's the shooter.
