A Nevada lawman is reportedly the focus of a grand jury investigation because of the controversial 2010 dashcam video above.
The camera was rolling as Henderson police Sergeant Brett Seekatz repeatedly kicked a driver in the head.
Officers later realized Adam Greene was experiencing diabetic shock.
Greene settled with the city for $300,000.
Seekatz was disciplined but still works for the department.
Because grand jury investigations are secret it's not clear what, if any, federal charges the officer will face.

Shocking dashcam captures moment driver having diabetic shock was kicked FIVE times in the head by cop who thought he was drunk
Las Vegas police sergeant Brett Seekatz is seen beating Adam Greene after he was pulled over for driving erratically
Victim suffered fractured ribs and bruises all over his body
Was awarded a $292,500 settlement after the 2010 beating
Seekatz was 'disciplined' but not suspended from duty or demoted
Federal grand duty is now hearing evidence in the incident
The man is shown to be unresponsive when an officer walks up to him, cursing, and kicks him in the head.
He is then kneed in the ribs by other officers as he screams out in pain.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and Greene was treated for low blood sugar. He was later treated for fractured ribs and bruises all over his body including his face and scalp.
In February, Greene was awarded a $292,500 settlement in the beating case.
Seekatz was 'disciplined' at the time, according to a Henderson police department statement, but was not suspended from duty or demoted.
However, it was revealed Tuesday that a grand jury has been hearing evidence for months about the incident.

(20,904 posts)Even if he WAS drunk, you still, as a cop, do NOT kick repeatedly. There are other ways to handle them.
The problem is that cops are trained to be hammers, and when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail. There's little training to recognize things like diabetic shock and mental illness breakdowns so that they aren't mistaken for aggressive criminality or disorderliness, etc. Any kind of disability can be a problem if you're stopped by police, because a lot of disabilities can seem threatening. I'm not deaf, but I do have a hearing impairment which has caused problems a couple of times when I've been pulled over for traffic stops, because I'll sometimes not fully understand what they're saying and nervousness makes it even worse.

(52,787 posts)speaks volumes as well. That man was not a threat, period. The other cops were accomplices IMO.
On a personal note, I can't help but be frightened to death when I see this shit. A loved one of mine is a type 1 diabetic (since a very young age.) When he goes into diabetic shock, he's frightened and often violent. He doesn't know who or where he is. I remember when he punched a paramedic in the jaw. ... I hate to think about the outcome for a man who wasn't so subdued?
Unfortunately this is not the first such incident I've read or heard about.

(20,904 posts)personally, without taking the time to determine just WHY a person might not be responsive or understand what's going on. I remember a case a few years ago (I think it might have been in Texas or AL, can't exactly remember now) where a man left his factory job early because he didn't feel well. A co-worker saw him sitting in his car, unmoving, and went out to check on him. He saidd he couldn't feel his legs, felt worse, was scared and needed help getting to the hospital. The co-worker immediately called 911. But the cops got there before the ambulance did and they just couldn't grasp the fact that the man literally could not physically move and was on the verge of unconciousness. One yelled at him to get out of the car and, when he couldn't, tasered him twice. Which ended up killing him. The co-workers who were present simply couldn't believe what they'd seen and called the cops on those cops, who ended up being fired and the city had to pay a huge settlement to the guy's family.
PatSeg

(2,483 posts)The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled this week that two East Chicago police officers did not act unreasonably in roughing up and arresting a diabetic driver who was suffering from a hypoglycemic episode.
Jerome Clement was an insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetic. His blood sugar periodically dropped, which could cause Clement to phase out, fall to the floor, and flail his arms in a non-combative manner.
On August 24, 2006, while driving to work, Clement turned his vehicle into the parking lot at a scrap yard and stopped on or near a truck scale. An employee approached and asked him to move, but he appeared not to hear what the employee said and responded in incomprehensible gibberish. Someone called 911 to report the incident. Clement eventually passed out at the wheel.
When East Chicago police officers arrived, they observed that Clement was unresponsive and his car smelled like beer, though there were no open containers. When Clement did not comply with their commands to step out of his car, the officers physically removed him, maced him two or three times, struck him four times with a baton to place handcuffs on him and prevent him from kicking his legs and flailing his arms, and kept him in the prone position until a paramedic arrived.

(12,618 posts)So let me get this straight, three activists with no knowledge of any crime or the people who committed it are incarcerated for what will likely be months and maybe years for refusing to speak to a grand jury about their political activities, but a cop kicks the hell out of a diabetic man in a seizure, fracturing his ribs, and he gets "disciplined."
I still laugh at people who wonder why cops are so hated.

(13,952 posts)Sure, there are going to be people doing rotten things like this video shows. It's all in the statistics. One video tell us nothing about police in general. The cop in this video probably felt like crap after he found the insulin.
You also have things like videos of mothers with Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy deliberately smothering their infants so they can "save" them at the last minute. That doesn't mean mothers are bad people. Just some are.

(13,952 posts)I don't interpret it the way you do. It looks to me like they find the insulin and they start to act like "oh shit." Now, the laughter at the end? It's disgusting, but it also sounds nervous, like somebody who knows he screwed up trying to break up a terrible sinking feeling.
The whole incident was ugly, incompetent, and disgusting. The way it looks to me is that the first cop started the ball rolling by responding poorly. He was scared and saw some guy acting disoriented and oddly and parked in an intersection. The cop interpreted the parked man's behavior as a threat instead of what it was, a medical emergency. For all he knew, the cop could have been dealing with an armed paranoid schizophrenic.
Should the cop have taken things a bit slower, calmed down, and assessed the situation from other angles? Sure. But maybe he is relatively new or not cut out to be a cop. Or maybe the guy in the car looked like he was fishing in his pockets for something (his insulin or, as the cop might think, a gun).
The other cops took their cue from the first. It became scared and angry cops forcibly subduing someone when who didn't need to be forcibly subdued.
These cops know they are on video, by the way. This was a very bad mistake committed by people who were scared and imperfect. And again, it says nothing about police in general.

(13,081 posts)The video is actually from Nevada Highway Patrol, who initiated the stop. HPD just showed up to be helpful. Henderson cops are known thought the valley as being racist assholes. I've never had a problem with them, but I'm also a middle class white male. God forbid if you're poor or brown or in a poor or brown neighborhood, then your best bet might honestly be to run, whether you're doing anything wro or not. They also refuse to add dashboard cams, claiming alternately that it would be too expensive (though they want to raise the sales tax to give themselves a raise; they're already one of the highest paid police forces in the nation) or that it would "complicate prosecutions."
And lest you think I'm exaggerating or just hate cops: I've lived on this community for my whole life. The crime and corruption and nepotism and general incompetence pervades throughout most of the law enforcement here, and I've seen it first hand. In fact, in the 1990s Las Vegas Metro was ranked by the FBI as the most corrupt police department in the nation.
I honestly don't think the majority of cops would do this shit themselves, but virtually all of them would help cover it up.

(3,539 posts)The man in question being a black male and not responding to a knock on the driver's side window had the cop break the window with his baton. The man a charter school principal was then dragged through the open window and given a few more pops to the head requiring stitches. That cop also thought the man was drunk when in fact the driver was having a diabetic episode. I do know that the driver filed a claim against the city for his injuries and false arrest but I don't know what the outcome of the case was.
