Should every woman in America over 18 years of age be REQUIRED to register for the draft just as men are? Daughter, Sisters, Mothers, Wives?

(11,365 posts)as long as there is lots of money to be made by private mercenaries and equivalent corporations.
However if there is a draft....the draft rules should be all men who have children go first (need to protect the gene pools and those guys have already made their contribution).
And the oldest men should serve first. and just like wanting to raise the retirement age...the draft age should also be expanded.
Lets see how the GOP 60 year old war-mongers feel if they are drafted in preference to silly 18-year-olds.

(84 posts)The likely hood was like 50%, would your answer stay the same?
Fresh_Start
(11,365 posts)but the old fart warmongers should be called first...especially since old fart warmongers thinks its okay to raise retirement age...it should also be okay to raise the draft age.

(12,482 posts)in fact i think we should have compulsory military or community service for everyone after high school. i think the more people with skin in the game the less likely we are to engage in imperial hi-jinx.

(12,482 posts)i think it is way to easy for politicians to send off kids who volunteered (often because they are poor and have few choices) to unecessary aggressive wars of choice. i think those decisions would be much more extensively debated and include stakeholders with political capital who politicians would listen to.
but i appreciate your point of view and the values i am sure inform them.
I always hated that. I hated having to sign up for Selective Service. While the chances of a draft happening anytime soon is slim, I shouldn't be forced to join the damn military if I don't want to.

(24,310 posts)Males who enter the country over the age of 26 do not need to register. If women are eventually required to register, I seriously doubt that my 88 year old mother will have to do so.
EarthWindFire
(84 posts)18 year old daughter may be forced to do so.

(18,881 posts)our rapists are blamed, shamed and punished instead of we women being told it's our fault for enticing men into becoming rapists.
On top of that, the UCMJ needs to better deal with sexual assaults in the military instead of telling us women to keep our mouths shut.

(1,406 posts)Is based on geographical locations. If you are in Iraq you get the money, no matter the job or sex. It is the same for all designated hostile areas. The UCMJ is pretty clear and plain on rape and sexual assault, it is the people entrusted to enforce it that are the root of the problem. Most of the top military leaders of this Generation have let all service members down and thus the American People.

Obviously not every woman (or man either) will be qualified as a combat soldier but they should all have the same opportunity.

(6,257 posts)no one should be forced to serve in the military. No one should be forced to aid in the U.S.'s wars of imperialism.

(84 posts)That was not the question, assuming there is a draft, which there is , and assuming all men over 18 are required to register for said draft, which they are, do you think women should also be required?
white_wolf
(6,257 posts)There is a registration for one, but we don't have a draft thankfully. That being said, women should have to register for the draft the same as men, but once again no one should be forced into military service.
EarthWindFire
(84 posts)Technically there is a draft, that is why must register for it, if there wasn't then we wouldn't be required to register for it.
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)No one has been drafted since 1973, forty years ago this month. It's not like it was in, say, 1957, when Elvis Presley was drafted during peacetime.

(33,424 posts)There is no draft now. Nor will there ever be. The military is totally opposed to it and easily meets its needs with volunteers.
EarthWindFire
(84 posts)And agree but saying the draft doesn't exist is not a factual statement... That's all I'm sayin.

(20,234 posts)isn't the same as having an election?
It's like that.
but as you register to vote you do so knowing that eventually there will be an election. I do not agree with the whole draft system, I think it should be abolished but as of right now it isn't.

(6,342 posts)If the country is being invaded or we are in the middle of World War III. There may be a need for a sudden increase in troop levels.
What we will never see again is a draft for a Vietnam-type war. The public doesnt have the stomach for that. But if our hand is forced into WWIII... we might need it.
oldhippie
(3,249 posts)... prohibited by the Constitution. Period. End of Discussion.
And I really don't care to hear about precedent or dire situations. Words mean things. I don't need a Supreme Court to tell me what English words mean.
davidn3600
(6,342 posts)The Supreme Court is never going to rule the Selective Service unconstitutional because of the 13th amendment.

(4,396 posts)And also do it like young people in Israel, both men and women must serve either in military or kittbuz. THe recent election there indicates a majority of the population wants exemptions of the ultra Orthodox religious should not be exempt. Maybe the urge for war will be thought out.
