but this weekend coming back from DC, I ended up having to stay in central PA. On Saturday I picked up a newspaper,The Gazette Weekend (published continuously since 1805, One of the oldest newspapers in the US) in Bedford PA.
I read in the paper that the Bedford Police Department will drive anyone home from a Super Bowl party who has had too much to drink. All you have to do is call the Police Department and they will pick you up & take you home.
In my opinion, this is cool.
There is about 3000 people who live in Bedford.

(12,081 posts)students. Attention should be brought upon the bad cops. The police force administration has to be accountable for hiring the wrong people, not properly training them, not having proper procedures, and not firing bad cops. But attention should also be brought to the good cops who really do care about the people they serve.

Here in Portland, OR on New Years all the public transit was free from about 8pm New Years eve until 2AM New Years Day. We're fortunate to have a really good public transit system that can get you just about anywhere in the metro area so there was no excuse for not taking advantage of this. So that probably saved lives and helped keep people out of jail. Cities and Police do good things all the time. Those just aren't usually ratings-worthy like pictures of police pepper-spraying protesters is.

(4,033 posts)we don't have that here in Pittsburgh. There once was a plan on New Year's Eve for cabs to pick you up it was either free or reduced in price.
The City does do "First Night" activities on New Year's Eve & it's concentrated Downtown. All most everyone comes by public transportation, and the buses run later than usual.
