After all, I live in a rural area, own a 4X$, have a pit bull and a few guns(thankfully no assault weapons, otherwise I'd be a real nut case).
Funny, I never noticed that before. Even funnier, I'm none of those things. Funniest yet, I'm probably more liberal than a lot of people making those assumptions.
DU can be a strange, funny place some days.

I have never seen the posts that suggested that rural people were not open minded or intelligent. Am I missing something?

I didn't see any posts suggesting that rural people didn't.
By the way, I thought that post was pretty silly in its generalities.

(33,224 posts)... when considering gun legislation. Some DU'ers considered this a sellout because "rural"="white rednecks".

DU gives us an opportunity to set the record straight, other wise the world would think we are all Freepers.
There are quite a few DU'ers who mistakenly take rural, truck and gun owners for Freepers, but they do so at their own intellectual peril.

(12,243 posts)When I left metropolitan KCMO to come to L.A. 20 plus years ago all I got was the following;
Do you know Dorothy and Toto?
How many tornadoes have you been in?
Did you go cow tipping?
How big was the farm you lived on?
What do you do for fun when everything is flat?
You get the idea. Did it get on my nerves. Yup. But I just kept at it and I don't hear these things as much anymore. I find it pretty funny overall.
One of my nephews confuses people all the time. He wears cowboy boots and hat, comes from the country in Kansas but is a complete nerd. He calls himself a Sophisticated Red-Neck. He defies logic to those around him and I think that is terrific.
Transplanting to L.A. the other side of it was:
Did you come here to become an actor?
Are you in a band?
What field of entertainment are you here for?
None of the above. I was asked if I wanted to go to California and I said yes.

(14,177 posts)Well not really we lived on the edge of town. By on the edge I mean we were about 4 miles away. And that was a fairly small town, less than 1,000 I think. I am not sure it was in the 70's population is just under 3000, now. I love pit bulls, didn't always. But, I met a few and they are sweet dogs. If I drove I would like a pick up truck they are useful for hauling a lot of stuff. I just wish they were fuel efficient. I don't ever want to own a gun, I have no need for one. But, I don't make fun of people that do. I do however think gun nuts have a problem a huge problem there is no need to own numerous assault weapons.
I don't get the thing about dissing people who live down south or rural areas myself. Having grown up in such a place I can tell you the range in intellect is pretty much the same as in an urban area. Small towners can be just as open minded as anyone else, yet there is some culture shock when we move to larger cities, there just is, just like the other way around. If you go from a big city to a small town you will have an adjustment period, you just will. There is no way to prepare for it.

(27,985 posts)But I've never run into one. I find the three pitbulls I know to be slobbery sweet who all love to lay that massive head/jaw on any willing lap. One of them is owned by a guy who has a special needs kiddo and I swear that dog is extra careful with her. I may be imagining it, but I do know that the man in question worships his daughter and loves his pit bull and wouldn't let that dog anywhere near her if he didn't have full confidence.
If I weren't allergic to them, pitbull would be on my list of dogs to have. As is, my options are limited to Poodle, Labradoodle (with papers and the correct enzyme bred in) and chihuahuas.

(57,936 posts)Or, if you think changes should be made, what would you suggest.
I agree with the President that gun laws should be decided locally.
I live in a city but have lived in the country. I understand why people in the country want guns, but here in the city, they are pretty useless for anything but sport. And if they are to be used for sport, they should be licensed, accounted for and locked up when not in use.
We have good police services. Our neighbors live right close to us. We just do not need a lot of weapons. The kids (read gang-members) get a hold of them, and wreak havoc on the streets. On streets right near me. On streets a few blocks from me.
We have small children, lots of them, living in our neighborhood. I really hate to think that a stray bullet could shatter a window and the lives of a family, a friend of mine.
What is your suggestion? We cannot prevent the gangs from getting guns when there are so many guns and so many people have them. We already have a gang injunction. It ensnares people who aren't in gangs. It is enforced, and the kids face serious consequences just for talking to friends on the streets. So the only criminals will have guns argument does not work. Our gang injunction should make gang shootings impossible. They don't. Any ideas?
