He's got it pointed down, and his weight is shifted onto his left leg so his right leg is at a bit of an angle. I would expect a shot like that to do pretty much what's in that last picture. What specifically do you see that doesn't add up?

for 28 years Ido know that the paths bullets take through the body are unpredictable and counterintuitive. This injury appears to follow the femur which is not unexpected. My guess is it was a .22 . A .38 or .357 would in all likelihood have shattered the femur leaving this knucklehead in a world of hurt since there is a good chance there could be damage to the femoral artery, which allows for rapid exanguination. I have managed a few gunshot patients with femoral artery Involvement and they were messy and lethal

And therefore, the bullet should tear the skin as it enters the leg at a very acute angle over by the hip bone. Instead, we have a neat, round hole in the middle-front of the leg instead of over where the gun was. Feel your own body over where the pistol is holstered and the muzzle flash is seen, almost all bone and skin.

What was he doing on the cell phone, taking acting/position cues from the producer behind the camera?

Why draw down in front of the target when you don't shoot from there? Why is the camera on?

Do you remember that old song by Blondie;

'I love myself; I want you to love me
When I feel down; I want you above me
I search myself; I want you to find me
I forget myself; I want you to remind me

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
Ooh I don't want anybody else Oh no, oh no, oh no

You're the one who makes me come runnin'
You're the sun who makes me shine
When you're around I'm always laughin'
I want to make you mine

I close my eyes and see you before me
Think I would die if you were to ignore me
A fool could see just how much I adore you
I'd get down on my knees; I'd do anything for you

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
ahh ohh i don't want anybody else
oh no oh on oh no yeah

I love myself; I want you to love me
When I feel down; I want you above me
I search myself; I want you to find me
I forget myself; I want you to remind me

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
ahh ohh i don't want anybody else
oh no oh no oh no

I want you
I don't want anybody else
and when i think about you; i touch myself

and bullets do not all go so straight, hitting a leaf can put a bullet out of trajectory. Having been shot in the face by a guy firing a Derringer while standing almost beside him and 10ft away I know slugs can go severely squirrelly. It was a plastic practice round fired with only a .38 primer, but still.

What I see is a guy pull his pistol and try to rack a round into the chamber that apparently had a round and the slide slipped out of his hand before full extension, it slid back and the hammer which had not locked back hit the round and he "fucking shot" himself.

I bet he racked the first round in a practice or failed first take. He didn't clear it and he went to the take we get to enjoy.

You think that twit is anti-gun? I'm pro-gun and I see asses like that all the time. That's why I've changed my mind on gun control, all the guys that are screaming against it are guys I don't want armed without some mandated safety classes and I want to know they aren't nuts and they actually have more qualifications than the money it takes to buy something they can't handle, that may kill me or you, intentionally or not.

Yards. Mayby a couple of hundred rounds at a time. Its all anout being able to draw and put rounds on target at close range using muscle memory. I currently can draw at five yards and put four rounds on a two second showing q target pretty consistently and sometimes five rounds. It takes a lot of practice to get the draw smooth and second nature.

So when i get a new holster its a pain as i have to work the mechanics a bit differently but the basic technique of disengaging the holster and punching the weapon out remain the same. Though when i shoot at twenty five yards im pretty crap with my grouping as i tend to fire double taps and i shoot with both eyes open.

It isn't the license that makes one safe, it's the practice. I'm not very pro gun but I've been to an indoor range a number of times with friends. I am awesome at braining paper zombies at distance. I had to practice pulling, chambering, then shooting because I never left a round in the chamber in a Glock as I had children around and children cannot chamber a round in a Glock.

On the other hand, not having a round chambered assured that I couldn't accidentally fire upon drawing my weapon, and it meant I couldn't have responded in five rounds in under five yards, no possible way, I was pretty good.

I wouldn't end up with less than 5 yards to respond. Though I no longer carry, I do still have the Glock within a few feet of me as I'm typing, and it's not got a round chambered. Glock's have no other real safety feature to assure children don't fire it, so I trained from beginning to end knowing I'd NEVER have a round pre-chambered.

My daughter is getting her CCW so soon I'll be handing my Glock over to her as I have no children to protect anymore. and I've never much cared for my own protection, but I was gonna be damned if anyone was going to hurt my children. That's done, I'm ready to be gun-free.

My point being, that you're honing a skill for which there doesn't seem to be any realistic application, and the mastery of which could get someone else seriously dead if your "muscle memory" outpaces your ability to correctly evaluate risk.

The guy who shot himself is the guy who put this video up and has left it up for years as a warning for other people who play with their guns. He says it's a great gun safety video and I have to agree with him.

That makes him a decent guy who used to be a dumbass with guns.

He's probably still got the guns. He just now knows not to play around with them and he wants other gun owners to know that, too.

(An interview with him has been posted here over the years)

You've got to be able to record anything up to and including the Trump of Doom without flinching.

I hate watching videos where the cameraman reacts to what's going on either by talking or moving the camera by falling down laughing.

This is internet gold. The "friend" will make the guy in hat famous forever. You can't get better friends.

I posted below (#66) the original video and the guy slo-mo'ed it. The gun flashed as well, which would be hard to add if it were fake.

But you are correct to assume he's a fame seeker.

119. If it is faked, the flash is because he used a blank for the shot. Check the kickback!!
Tue Jan 29, 2013, 09:05 PM
Jan 2013

I also noted how little the gun kicked back. Watch how little his elbow moves up from the discharge. A full-jacket 45 slug should have some kick, not??

Also, he makes his way to the camera, playing to the recording. I think if I shot myself by accident, I would not play to the camera. I'd forget about the camera.

Also:

Why was the camera running if he wasn't going to fake shooting himself?

Why was he unholstering the gun if he wasn't going to fake shooting himself?

I think it is a con, slick, but a con for video fame.

I believe the guy had a retention holster that prevents the gun from simply being yanked out. They require you to first put your index finger on a little release tab and then pull the gun from holster. This guy did the opposite of that and pulled up first and probably curled his finger to reach the tab. Doing that puts the finger in a position where it will slip into the trigger guard as he finally pulls the gun out (where you don't want it to be) . To his credit, he's owned up to his mistake and even went on to Tosh.0 to poke fun at himself.

58. Assuming that's a 1911, he's incredibly irresponsible AND incompetent
Tue Jan 29, 2013, 01:16 PM
Jan 2013

That particular handgun has a thumb safety; it MUST ALWAYS BE ON. The safety lever is located so that when you draw it, your thumb will rest on the catch; AFTER you've cleared the holster, while the gun is coming up, you sweep your thumb down across the catch to arm the pistol. It's an extremely smooth, natural motion - in fact, disengaging it before the gun has cleared the holster and is not pointed at your knee is awkward and counter-intuitive. My guess is this moran figured not switching it on, and going finger-on-trigger before the draw was done, would somehow make his shooting faster.

It won't. I've carried a 1911 and with the appropriate practice, drawing the pistol WITH YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, sweeping the safety, and only THEN putting your finger on the trigger is very easy and natural to do while the pistol is coming up into firing position, well clear of your body parts. John Browning knew what the hell he was doing and trying to second-guess him is only gonna hurt.

And yes, this is endlessly amusing

The wound looks like a straight in shot, not aligned with the exit hole, which looks straight out.

Replay the video of the gun discharge, and note the angle of the shot and position of the gun, at the top of the holster and not on the front of his leg, on the side instead. However, the entry bullet hole is more on the front of the leg and the exit is to the side of the knee. The muzzle flash frame has the gun beside his hip and maybe even behind the hip center line. So, are the holes in the leg in the correct positions? It seems like a fake to me from looking at the videos. Is there a 911 call and did the paramedics go to the gun range?

Also, was he taking a call on a cell phone? What was he raising to his ear when he drew the gun?

"wingnut" and I have no problem with your sending this video to anyone and think it is a damn good idea.

Wise, experienced shooters will tell you that there are two classes of shooters:

1) Those who have had an accidental discharge.

2) Those who will.

I have been very fortunate as while I have enjoyed shooting handguns for over 40 years on a regular basis, I have not yet had an AD. That doesn't mean that the next time I pick up a firearm I will not have one. It is always necessary to practice gun safety and to always keep the muzzle of the weapon pointed in a safe direction just in case you screw up.

Videos like this are excellent reminders of just how dangerous firearms are even in experienced hands.
