The president said,
So at this moment, it looks like theres a genuine desire to get this done soon, and thats very encouraging. But this time, action must follow. We cant allow immigration reform to get bogged down in an endless debate. Weve been debating this a very long time. So its not as if we dont know technically what needs to get done.
As a consequence, to help move this process along, today Im laying out my ideas for immigration reform. And my hope is that this provides some key markers to members of Congress as they craft a bill, because the ideas Im proposing have traditionally been supported by both Democrats, like Ted Kennedy, and Republicans, like President George W. Bush. You dont get that match-up very often
So so we know where the consensus should be. Now, of course, there will be rigorous debate about many of the details, and every stakeholder should engage in real give-and-take in the process. But its important for us to recognize that the foundation for bipartisan action is already in place. And if Congress is unable to move forward in a timely fashion, I will send up a bill based on my proposal and insist that they vote on it right away.
The presidents immigration reform proposal includes four parts, First, continue to strengthen our borders. Second, crack down on companies that hire undocumented workers. Third, hold undocumented immigrants accountable before they can earn their citizenship; this means requiring undocumented workers to pay their taxes and a penalty, move to the back of the line, learn English, and pass background checks. Fourth, streamline the legal immigration system for families, workers, and employers.
Since he came from the Senate to the presidency, Obama spent much of his first two years in office watching his agenda get bogged down in congressional trench warfare. The attitude of second term President Obama is completely different. He is the one telling Congress what he wants from them. If they drag their feet, or if Republicans in the House or Senate try to bog down the legislation, he is going to send his own bill to the Congress and demand a vote.
Obama wasnt just showing leadership in his speech. He was also sowing the seeds for potential Republican self destruction. The scenario goes something like this. A group of congressional Republicans decide that they are going to kill immigration reform. They bog down the legislation in the congressional swamp of inaction that is our current legislative process. The president sends his bill to the Congress for a vote. Democrats and enough Senate Republicans come together to pass his bill. If House Republicans reject his legislation, the table is then set for Democrats to build on their support from Hispanic voters in 2014 and 2016.

(2,108 posts)if my people is able to get a real social security number, they will be able to pay their taxes and know were their money goes,
no more overpaying fees a regular stores cashing their checks with higher fees for not having the proper ID, no more employers taking chunks of money out of their regular pay with an excuse like " take it or leave it" ....I was one of those people working on the fields in California , shit... so many assholes took advantage of my work and my money...they will offer to cash my checks ..and they will take a good amount of money that I didn't know..and they used to tell me...well you pay taxes to the government...you pay for social security and other things... and not to said anything and be grateful to get $200 or $300 if I was lucky every 3 or 4 weeks...

They think it's just checkers.
The GOP IS DEAD! LOL!!!! If they fail to pass this, they are screwed. If they DO pass it, well, they are screwed just as hard, because no person of Latin American origins would ever vote for a rethug.
I cannot WAIT till the Rethug party is dead and buried, and we can get about the business!!!!!

(26,355 posts)The Republicans now have no choice but to choose the way in which they lose.
Support immigration reform, and watch the teabaggers howl in rage, don their white sheets and swastikas, throw primaries, and split the party in half.
Block immigration reform, and watch the party shrink and shrink for at least the next decade as every minority member in America gives them the collective middle finger and makes it their mission in life to drive the GOP out of power.
I know, everyone makes a cliched joke out of the chess metaphor.

they own the House en perpetuus
sooner or later, they will accept gerrymandering of State electorates as a legit tactic.
the money they wasted in the last election was a drop-in-the-bucket for those who ponied up the dough.
the "bewildered herd" will continue to fight each other (proChoice/proLife, Progun/antiGun, Black/white/latino/asian, Gay/straight, Dem/repub, pointy-headed Elitists/ backwoods Rednecks, et Al ) while Wall Street continues to increase the Wealth gap. When the People finally wake up to the fact that they have been impoverished by the 1% while they were fighting amongst themselves, they will suddenly realize that the right to free speech, and assembly are now privileges to be granted ( Or not ) by their government; they are no longer inalienable rights.
Drones will fly over the US.
The GOP is not dead, but if the 1% is successful in its attempts to control this democracy, it may soon be unnecessary....

(14,923 posts)The first step in the legislative process is the introduction of a bill to Congress. Anyone can write it, but only members of Congress can introduce legislation. Some important bills are traditionally introduced at the request of the President, such as the annual federal budget. During the legislative process, however, the initial bill can undergo drastic changes.
