Congressman Raul Grijalva's name is being floated as a possible appointment to be the next Secretary of the Interior, and I could not think of a better choice to lead this important federal agency. It would be a bold pick that would dramatically change how our federal government treats our federal lands. Will you join with other protectors of our environment and ask President Obama to Appoint Raul Grijalva as Secretary of the Interior?
Raul Grijalva's leadership on the House Natural Resources Committee has demonstrated how he is a champion of clean air, clean water, renewable energy, comprehensive mining reform and environmental conservation. He is the type of bold leader that we need at the Department of the Interior. We need his leadership to better conserve our public lands for generations to come. His appointment will send a strong signal to special interest groups and well-funded lobbyists: the days of influencing our environment with cronyism and fat checks are over.
Raul is a friend to me and to our movement. As co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Raul has been an outspoken supporter of health care for all Americans, fairness in our tax code and bringing our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and has been a leading voice for fair, comprehensive immigration reform.
If Raul Grijalva is named the 51st Secretary of Interior, we know that we will have a champion on behalf of all Americans in this critical cabinet position during President Obama's second term.
But we only have a few days before President Obama is expected to make his decision on who to nominate. Please sign this petition and tell him to appoint Raul Grijalva as Interior Secretary.
Forward,
Dennis Kucinich

(7,365 posts)We haven't had a good Interior Sec since Babbit.
The people under Bush were pathetic. Kempthorpe was better than Norton, but that's not saying much.

(19,537 posts)If he had been the initial choice for Interior, who I wanted back in 2008, we might have avoided disasters with better oversight like the coal mining disaster, which is an industry RFK, Jr. was intimately involved with monitoring from the outside for wrongdoing like Mercury poisoning, etc. Perhaps we might have gotten the offshore oil drilling monitoring organizational flaws fixed in time before the Gulf Oil spill had happened, which might have prevented it as well. Salazar was worthless and I'm glad Obama is replacing him now. Grijalva would certainly be a good move in the right direction, and I'm sure he'd have RFK, Jr.'s ear on a lot of areas of what he does.
But I'm wondering if part of this move is to limit the Progressive caucus strength from getting too much power in 2014 midterms if you take someone like Grijalva out of the picture.
Two questions to ask:
1) How much is Grijalva interested in this position. If very interested, I cannot deny him that opportunity just to keep him in the House.
2) Do we have an identified (perhaps by Raul himself) a good person to step up to the bar to replace him and be another good progressive rep in the House. If we can then definitely this move is good, as it gets one more progressive voice more experience in government that we can build upon.
Right now, mostly what we are doing is building for 2014 in the House, so we should keep that in mind.

I think we will get some hack
but hope for the best.
He'd make a great interior secretary.

(25,816 posts)The Dems in Az would lose a great congressman. I live in Barber's district and I know first hand how hard it is to get Dems elected here in Az. When Pres Obama appointed Napolitano we ended up with Janet Brewer as our guv---UGH!
I agree with the poster upthread about Richardson.
