The Lawrence O'Donnell Wing-Nut ' SMACKDOWN ' begins at 5:00 of video.
During an interview on The Last Word Wednesday night, MSNBCs Lawrence ODonnell challenged Trotter for not being able to provide one real life example of a case when an assault weapon specifically saved one womans life in that kind of a situation. You dont go to the Senate to imagine things! ODonnell said.
While speaking in front of the senators, Trotter described a hypothetical scene of a young woman defending her babies in her home when faced with three, four, five violent attackers, intruders in her home with her children screaming in the background as a reason to own an assault rifle.
The peace of mind that she has, knowing that she has a scary-looking gun, gives her more courage when shes fighting hardened, violent criminals, said Trotter, who was the only woman on the five-person panel. If we ban these types of assault weapons, you are putting these types of women at a great disadvantagemore so than men because they dont have the same type of physical strength and opportunity to defend themselves in a hand-to-hand struggle.

(5,842 posts)for not backing down from his distaste for the NRA's survivalist wing and Wayne LaPierre's no-compromise attitude towards any attempts to reduce gun violence.
I fully expected him to swing back the other way once enough time had passed but I seems I'm wrong.

Babies clinging to her ankles as she stands resolute with feet planted apart while blowing away five evil men intent on taking her babies, and probably her weapon, with a look of rage and blood lust that would stop a charging rhino in its tracks. (4,982 posts)Gayle Trotter Opposed Law To Protect Women Before Testifying On Guns For Moms
Trotter opposed VAWA, she wrote last year, because it opened the door to false accusers wasting taxpayer funds.
Americans all want to deter violence, but we also need to protect that foundational principle of the presumption of innocence, said her April 2012 post. Needed resources like shelters and legal aid can be taken by false accusers, denying real victims of abuse access to these supports. That result runs directly counter to the VAWAs spirit.

HOW MANY women have gone into the public or private sphere with high-capacity assault weapons and started shooting up people? Usually the perps are male. For whatever reason (I'm not slamming men here. That's just how it is.)
Yet this dingbat's answer to this is to fight AGAINST the VAWA and FOR continuing to allow assault weapons.

(2,145 posts)this group has several spokes- mannequins who pop up all over media, both right and left, and parrot the repugnant talking point of the day. They make the usual arguments for whatever the topic is at the time, no one in the media challenges their nonsense. I was so happy that LO challenged her insanity. Hopefully, someone in the media will dig into the funding of this rw nonsense bureau and expose them for what they are.

(71 posts)If you look up "the compelling story of Sarah McKinley," you will see there is quite a bit odd about that story. People need to be wary of projecting themselves into the public eye when there are skeletons in the closet.

blue_heron
(223 posts)I didn't track this story closely, but a few quick searches led to pages where my anti-virus software gave me warnings not to proceed.
but agree something about the story strikes me as odd. she's 18 with a 3 month old baby. this incident occurred the first week of January 2012, and her husband had died a week earlier from lung cancer. intruders were allegedly after his prescription drugs. I'm trying to figure out how old the husband was....an image suggests he was much much much older...and something suggests he was a rodeo rider? somehow they knew he had a lot of pain killers?
so the backstory of how this young woman winds up pregnant with a significantly older man who has terminal lung cancer seems does seem odd

(4,695 posts)less about gun violence. Even though the State of Texas closed down many county and community mental health care offices, under the TEA TX Legislature and Governor Rick Perry, several years ago, he would accept federal funding for the business community's mental health care facilities.

(5,756 posts)First of all she wouldn't answer questions with a simple answer and O'Donnell called her out on it. It was beautiful to watch.
Then when he gave her a chance to speak she made it seem like the whole ban was solely a women's issue. I know her organization is the Independent Womens Forum but she was ridiculous. She kept spouting over and over again we didn't need to place on undue burden on women to protect themselves. Again, as if the AWB is all about preventing only women from buying an assault-style weapon.
She said "its a scary looking gun." Quite frankly, any gun pointed at me is a scary looking gun. I suspect most common burglars/home invaders probably feel the same. I know there are those totally crazy ones who don't and will advance on a person with a weapon. They're nuts and deserve to get shot if that's what the home owner has to do to defend themselves.
As O'Donnell repeatedly pointed out all of the anecdotes presented in the hearing were about people using more common lower-end weapons like shotguns to defend themselves. Not a single one was presented about use of an assault-style weapon. So the GOP Senators and the NRA types actually proved the argument of the people who want to regulate the assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. They proved that neither of these is necessary for home defense.

We have to take action, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. urged in response to the Newtown horror. The president is absolutely committed to keeping his promise that we will act.
In other words, to quote a frat boy from the movie Animal House: I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebodys part.
