1. I had an interesting experience the other day. A new client

came in - looked like a regular tall, slender, athletically built young woman with wavy blonde hair cut perfectly, beautiful hands with perfect nails (if a bit mannish), and slender but distinctly muscled legs - wearing short shorts and a chic black top, cowl type scarf, boots, leather jacket.

She opened her mouth to speak and I had to do a double take. She is clearly a transvestite, but a VERY good one (good, as in very successful and doesn't look at all like a man). She had the speech and mannerisms of what one thinks of as a typical gay male.

In the afternoon when she picked up her cat she was in tight jeans and dressed more androgynously. She put her name on the record as a clearly male name but told me she goes by another, androgynous, name. I didn't ask any details or explanation (I think that would be rude) but I am pretty sure I'm correct about my take on her.

I just hadn't seen such a successful male >>> female example before. She's a very attractive, feminine, woman. Just was really interesting to me. Wish I looked as good.

Just before heading back to University of Nevada, Reno, where Dana is a senior, he talked about his new life in an interview at his parents' Gardnerville home.

“I want to be able to reach out to people in our community who may be struggling with similar issues,” Dana said. “I've recently started doing lots of public speaking and advocacy work, and I absolutely love it.”



What has eased the transition is the support of his family.

“It's so rare for a transgender to hear this,” he said. “I want people to know you can have a good experience. It's not as scary as you think.”

Supportive family - that's pretty cool.
