Interracial poster by S. African youth group stirs debate
An interracial poster distributed on college campuses by the student wing of South Africa's Democratic Alliance has (intentionally) caused an uproar by raising sensitive issues of politics, race and sex in the country's post-apartheid society, The Globe and Mail reports.
The newspaper says the South African media was dominated by heated debate among politicians and commentators within days of the poster's appearance.

(72,104 posts)Has anybody else ever done this?: any time I see an inter-racial couple, I just automatically assume they're liberal. But that's not necessarily true, is it?

(20,574 posts)is to have the man be blond. That way, white South Africans would tend to think he was an Afrikaner. Then they'd look at least three times.

(8,556 posts)He probably didn't do his homework on this one. The poster comes from the Democratic Alliance, which is more or less the white opposition to the black ANC (I think there is a smaller black opposition party too). He seemed to be arguing that this was an anti-white poster, but that's not at all the case. Since whites are a minority in South Africa, they are the ones urging tolerance and racial harmony, etc.

(2,682 posts)but if they wanted to really cause a stir, they could have tapped into the standard racist fear of a black man with a white woman.
I used to have a standing argument with my moon-bat crazy mother. She said that children of a mixed marriage are the ones to suffer. I told her there would be no suffering if racists like her would just mind their own business and leave them alone to live their lives like anyone else.

(8,556 posts)It's a black majority country. Blacks run the show and whites are their minority. It's far more controversial to depict a white man with a black woman for the same reason that the opposite is true here.
The poster was produced by the main white opposition party.
