Updated 12:52 pm ET. Always one to speak -- or Tweet -- his mind, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Monday made a joke comparing Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a monkey, something one Republican congressman charged was racist.

Did you know what party you joined?
Maybe the GOP is trying to clean up their image for 2014 and beyond. Ain't buying it now and pity anyone who does.

Mahmoud is an ASSHOLE. "Monkey" would be a step up.
I see the whole imbroglio is about the fake "monkey in space" story the GOI is shopping.
I don't see the comment as racist in that context, I think that Justin Amash has been tasked to take Johnny Boy down a peg, for reasons unclear at this time. Either that, or Amash is thinking about his Palestinian roots and the fact that Iran shovels money at the Authority (when they have it, anyway).
Of course, if Amash knew what Mahmoud and the Ulema of Iran have to say about Arabs when the doors are closed, he might not be so thrilled to defend the guy. Those guys often as not find the Arabs to be just a step above animals, when they talk privately. They believe that the true culture of the region came out of the Persian Empire, and that the Arabs were a bunch of uncivilized buffoons stumbling about in the desert until they came under the cultural civilizing of their influence.
Of course, this isn't really true, but it's a common perception.
