(9,922 posts)WASHINGTON The White House on Wednesday directed the Justice Department to release to the two Congressional Intelligence Committees classified documents discussing the legal justification for killing, by drone strikes and other means, American citizens abroad who are considered terrorists.
The White House announcement appears to refer to a long, detailed 2010 memo from the Justice Departments Office of Legal Counsel justifying the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born cleric who had joined Al Qaeda in Yemen. He was killed in a C.I.A. drone strike in September 2011. Members of Congress have long demanded access to the legal memorandum.
The decision to release the legal memo to the Intelligence Committees came under pressure, two days after a bipartisan group of 11 senators joined a growing chorus asking for more information about the legal justification for targeted killings, especially of Americans.
The announcement also came on the eve of the confirmation hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon for John O. Brennan, President Obamas choice to be director of the C.I.A., who has been the chief architect of the drone program as Mr. Obamas counterterrorism adviser.

(8,219 posts)Do you get a membership card...kinda like joining AAA?
I'd like to see one of those cards.
Maybe al-Awlaki's son had an associate membership.
This whole thing is so odious. More so because I just heard on the radio that Pres. Obama is speaking this morning at the national prayer breakfast. He needs to be praying to whatever gods there are, for forgiveness.

(15,689 posts)are the very sort of "leaders" the founding fathers were warning us about. Those among us who say "Good citizens would trust their Leaders", are the very sort of "citizens" the framers of the Constitution worried most about. "Leaders" who say just trust us are thugs. Their followers are a mob.

Now, if you're REALLY interested in monkey wrenching the Blue Meanies, hack one of their domestic drones (30,000 strong in the near future):
Researchers use spoofing to 'hack' into a flying drone
American researchers took control of a flying drone by "hacking" into its GPS system - acting on a $1,000 (£640) dare from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A University of Texas at Austin team used "spoofing" - a technique where the drone mistakes the signal from hackers for the one sent from GPS satellites.
The same method may have been used to bring down a US drone in Iran in 2011.
.
.
Spoofers are a new problem for GPS-guided drones, allowing hackers to trick navigation systems with false information. Humphreys and the team have designed a device costing less than $1,000 that sends out a GPS signal stronger than the ones coming down from orbiting satellites. At first, the rogue signal mimics the official one in order to trick the drone, and once its accepted new commands can be sent to the UAV. Naturally, Humphreys highlights the associated risks of such a device, saying that in the wrong hands drones could be turned into missiles. Right now drones cant be used in US airspace on a wide basis, but Congress has asked the FAA to come up with regulations that would allows drones to fly over the United States by 2015. That could lead to usage in law enforcement, as well as by power companies and delivery firms. The US government says its aware of the potential dangers of spoofing, and officials from the FAA and Department of Homeland Security have seen Humphreys demonstration first hand. The Department of Homeland Security reportedly has a program in place to try and solve the problem of GPS interference, but its aimed at trying to deal with jammed signals, not spoofed ones.

Obsession with National Security (#7 of "The 14 Characteristics of Fascism" :
"Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting national security, and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous."

(13 posts)this usurpation of the Constitution only exists because of the war Powers Act. Congress has decided to never declare war, merely impart all the war power making to the office of the president. This way they avoid the political backlash from the declaration of war.
as long as Congress deems that the president has all the war powers abilities, things like killing of Americans, and DHS on and on will continue. We are under "Martial Law" in the USA because of the "terror " threats , and thus there are no constitutional protections.
