(7,044 posts)They have to find some new ways to tear down America and its honorable veterans and their families. This would seem to be right down the usual ALLEy of oPPorTuniTy for the noisy claque of Republican Chickenhawks....
ReRe
(12,189 posts)...won't make a peep about this photo. The whole world would come down on their NECKS. And if that happened, we could have chickenhawk soup for everyone! That does'rt really sound too appetizing does it? It would be poisonous. Yuk!

(7,044 posts)I have come to the point where I would not put any nasty anti-American action by Republican Chickenhawks past the point of possibility -- they have acted without honor so often.

(7,044 posts)That was yet another shameful & unpatriotic Chickenhawk Republican action.

Thank you for the heart, Control-Z, you are a real sweetheart!
I'm not sure if I'll get any hearts in time to give this year, I had to send in a money order, but you, too, deserve many more hearts as a long-time and much appreciated DUer.

beaming at the antics of a baby boy...quite the moment in time.
And the daddy, trying to figure out how exactly to rein in his little one, without raising a ruckus.
I loved seeing this.

(93,561 posts)which kind of makes it even more funny. he was trying to get the kid to go to his mom and then finally just picked him up and handedhim to her.

(8,554 posts)and as I watched him last night (a really nice interview, by the way), I had to smile all over again, realizing that you were correct.
The soldier trying to politely herd that little guy was just doing his duty and accomplished his mission, maintaining the proper decorum for that solemn affair, returning the baby to his mama with nary a fuss. It does make the video even more precious!

Now I don't mean to be a total buzz-kill here but I would like to point something out that has always bugged me when some people refer to Medal of Honor recipients as having "won" the award. You don't "win" the MOH: One is awarded this illustrious medal, our nation's highest, for "conspicuous acts of gallantry above and beyond the call of duty."
One may "win" a sporting contest, life-long soul-mate or battle with a dread disease but to refer to an MOH-recipient as having "won" the medal is to subtly diminish and degrade both the man or woman and the award itself.
Many veterans who have received the Medal of Honor readily admit that they'd melt it down in a heartbeat if that action could bring their buddies back. And many is the veteran who, in wiping away a bitter tear, has brokenly proclaimed, "I got the medal because I survived. The good men died on that hill/plain/valley."
Something sobering to think about and keep in mind as we honor these recipientsby never, ever referring to gallant men and women as having "won" the Medal of Honor.
Peace out.

Suicide in the Trenches by Siegfried Sassoon, 1918
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray youll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Hard to believe this guy, his beautiful boy, our president and you and I have to share the planet with the likes of a Ted Nugent . . .

(536 posts)never knew it until we went through his things after his death. I don't recall him ever talking about his experience. He was a gunner's mate - I believe is the correct title - made sure the rounds going into a machine gun were fed properly. Anyway, imagining what he saw - the damage of the gunfire, being a huge target themselves, it is mind boggling.
Parades are nice, but they deserve so much more.

I don't mind being corrected on this sort of thing. I'd rather get it right.

(612 posts)Rather, it was my intention to make a general comment about a matter of some gravitas and import given the solemnity of the moment.
But thank you for for responding in so large-hearted, kind and honest a fashion.

My brother's son essentially did the same thing at my sister's wedding. He stayed up there and the Rabbi worked it into her speech.

(15,480 posts)USMC retired Brigadier General Thomas V. Draude (in second row of seats, w/shadow across bottom of his face). He received two Silver Stars for heroism in Vietnam, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. The last three with the combat V for valor.
Here is the very moving story of his valor, as recounted by General Charles C. Krulak, Commandant (1995-1999) USMC, of the events which earned him his first Silver Star. http://www.mike37.org/ms_66_01.htm
High school valedictorian, football team captain, US Naval Academy graduate and all round natural leader and kind human being. His closest guarded secret in high school was that his middle initial, "V" stood for Valentine. I knew that cause I worked in the school office but never told anyone - until now!
