(23,953 posts)I fear it will need to wait until the morning, as my brain and eyes are useless now. I will be up ungodly early and will check in here first thing.
In the highlighted Wishlist post in the OP...in green...I tested the links and the PayPal link works for me. However, someone just wrote and said it didn't work for them. Maybe it's a browser thing? I don't know.
If you do sign up at Wishadoo, please remember to check your spam folder for the verification email. I can always do it for you manually, so just message me if you don't see it come through.
Thanks, everyone.

(60,157 posts)added up, it could make a huge difference.
I happen to know who "long time Du-er" is and sent in what I could spare at the moment.
I wrote a very recent post about the recent tornadoes and those who bash people living in Southern states.
It got over 2,000 views.
What if each of those views had been able to give 1.00 to our struggling DU members?
Little raindrops and all that.......
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)THAT is a great idea! $1.00 and Up Fundraisers or something like that. Even those of us who are in dire financial straights could pony up $1.00. Any ideas how we could make that happen?
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)I'm honestly not sure how to do it, because I know I, personally, don't want to have to decide which DUer needs are allotted x amount of funds raised.
But for those interested, it's definitely worth brainstorming, imho.
I can handle the technical aspects of the fundraising, but the distribution is the challenging part.
I'd sure love to have a circle of DUers to explore ways to help others in this community -- and beyond -- more reliably.
So, you're on the list, and I'll be in touch!!!
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)Maybe a monthly DU fundraiser (with the Administration's approval, of course). Put up a list of in-need DUers (much like you did in this thread) and let the donors decide where they want their $1.00+ to go?
I've been meaning to go re-visit the Wishadoo.org website again anyway. Just let me know how I can help.
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)The problem is, not everyone sees them. (you can see my journal for previous similar OPs)
I think that's the main purpose of enlisting this Circle of people; to compile a list of people for me to message when I post an OP like this, so they can help however they want. At least they'll be aware of it. I can't message everyone, obviously, and instead just beg people to keep it kicked. Lots of wonderful people do, of course.
It's hard to have these posts get visibility, especially when OPs don't stay on the Greatest Page long.
If I can just get people into the habit of checking in at the Wishlist, that would help. Yeah, and to join Wishadoo. That would REALLY help.

(60,157 posts)that One Grass Root has created...
And in the OP there are several DU folks listed who need a helping hand
So I would think that provides a way to do it, just click on the linked names.
The web site has a "progress" report under each name.
So,if you ask 5 people to donate, and they ask 5 people to donate......

(22,271 posts)The absolute WORST thing about experiencing financial hardship is that you aren't in the position to help others when you SO want to help others. So many in need.
dixiegrrrrl
(60,157 posts)That's the other problem.
So many of us are just a hospital bill away from serious trouble.
That's why organizing to help each other out is so important, even if we can only afford a couple of bucks.
That is what communites do, they all get together to help their neighbor because they know who that person is.
DU is a community and we know people here who need a helping hand.
And while many of us are having financial hardships, most people can spare 1.00 at any given time.
I am trusting that my rather small donation will be combined with other donations and equal a big impact
for the DU members that One Grass Root identified.
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)Really.
My experience with this social experiment called Wishadoo! and engaging in service work for decades has shown me, time and time again, that the simple act of acknowledging others -- acknowledging THEM and their struggle -- means THE WORLD.
Even if people can't offer money or advice, we can acknowledge the person who had the courage to be vulnerable in sharing their situation. Knowing others care and are offering moral support is truly priceless.
Feeling alone and isolated may be the worst feeling ever. It's amazing how one's situation can change, however slightly for the better, once we know we're not alone.
I felt alone and isolated for many, many years, and I was determined to find a way for others not to feel that. Hence, Wishadoo!
So, please don't be sad. You're offering a tremendous gift by keeping these threads kicked and reaching out to the people to acknowledge them and their situation.

Thanks to whoever gave the hearts. I'd heard of Wishadoo but never really checked it out to see what it is. There have been too many distractions with health, work, etc. lately. But it's a great idea and I'm happy to be introduced to it.

(23,953 posts)There is a way to set Wishadoo!'s Wishlist up to have a "private" Wishlist of sorts, just for the DU community.
If enough people want to make use of it that way, I can get to work on setting it up. I'm trying to gather a group of DUers who are interested in brainstorming the best way to reliably help others here. These OPs are great, and I'm grateful Skinner has given blanket permission to do so, but it's hard to keep OPs visible on a busy board such as this.
As you may have noticed, I do posts like this periodically (please see my journal), and indicate in the OP which Wishlist posts have been created by, or for, DUers. That's how I've been doing it thus far.
The Wishlist is available for anyone to use, including outside of the DU community, of course.
Nice to meet you!
auburngrad82
(5,029 posts)I never really knew what it was about. The timing of your thread was fortuitous. I told my wife about it last night and she said she'd been looking for a place to make donations since we're not supporting Susan G Komen any more. Last year we mostly stuck with the Raleigh Homeless Mission for donations, but Wishadoo opens a whole new world for us.
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)So am I!
We should chat.
I'll send you a message here.
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)I've updated the Wishlist post and the OP to reflect this (in red, so it jumps out).
YOU'RE ALL WONDERFUL!!!!
I know that a few of the other Wishlist posts got a rather large donation by a quiet, big-hearted DUer I had the pleasure of meeting today.
The other DUers haven't checked in yet. Some of the posts have a widget that shows the progress of the fundraiser embedded with their Wishlist post. There is a lag time but it still helps to see the progress.
Finally, I've discovered that different browsers are making things not work or display differently, specifically as it concerns the PayPal buttons within the individual Wishlist posts. The creator of those listings provides the code -- generated from PayPal -- and I swear it looks different each time. If someone is using IE, it seems they can't use those PayPal links AT ALL (even though PayPal provided the code!). I'll be looking into this and see about streamlining this for future reference.
I think that's all for now. Hug yourselves!!!
Oh wait, HUGE

(23,953 posts)The beloved DUer whose Wishlist post is highlighted in green in the OP.
WE'RE NOW ONLY $75 away from his original goal which helps him get through the next couple of weeks with a wee bit less stress. As he wrote in his Wishlist post, he's hoping short-term disability will kick in soon, but we all know that can take longer than anticipated, with medical-related expenses intervening in the interim.
It can't hurt to go over his requested amount. Just sayin'.

(23,953 posts)I've deleted this OP to avoid confusion and have copied and pasted the original content below:
(I was previously given permission by Skinner to post periodically about http://www.wishadoo.org, especially when it involves DUers, with this required disclaimer: "The administrators of Democratic Underground have given permission for one discussion thread on this topic. The administrators of Democratic Underground make no claims regarding the legitimacy or illegitimacy of this fundraising effort. Permission was granted by Skinner on 8/6/2010, and the moderators have been notified."
If you're not familiar with Wishadoo, please see my journal for previous posts.
Please also check out my recent OP asking for your help in spreading the word and my post earlier today introducing the idea of a DU Angel Circle of sorts.
The most recent Wishlist post was done on behalf of a DUer in crisis; hopefully a short-term crisis but a crisis nevertheless. He has been here for 9 years and is VERY active, a beloved DUer. He prefers that his DU name not be included, however.
Please click here to see the Wishlist post for more detail and for the link to PayPal.
Time is of the essence in this case; the wolves are at the door and this loving father is stressed to the max.
12/15/13 Regarding the above Wishlist post, the official goal was reached!!! BUT PLEASE DON'T FORGET THE DUers LISTED BELOW AS WELL!!!
After checking out that post, please read other DUers' Wishlist Posts...
(click the DU name to see their Wishlist post, as they also need any assistance you have to offer, including your knowledge, insight, or simply moral support. You can contact them directly via Wishadoo or here at DU with any questions. Some posts have convenient donate widgets embedded for you to see the progress of their individual fundraising needs).
* VenusRising needs support with rent and bills. Many here offered moral support when her husband passed away suddenly three years ago. Please also see her recent DU thread for more information about her current situation.
VenusRising has received more donations but has a way to go. Her Wishlist post has a widget which shows the progress of her fundraiser.
* Another long-time DUer in good standing is asking for help. What he wants more than anything is to find an IT job but could use support in other ways now as well. He would prefer to not share his DU name but is indeed a member here.
This DUer has VERY PROMISING jobs leads thanks to suggestions by DUers!!!!! If you need a job or know of positions available, please see this OP.
There are more...
A. bakprkr, has posted the most recent request in the Wishlist. He is a vet, who has been struggling tremendously to avoid homelessness and needs transportation for employment (mass transit simply isn't available in many areas). His request is straightforward, and he's included a PayPal clickable icon. He has also permitted me to share his blog link, where you can follow his journey:
http://homelessvarmyvet.blogspot.com/
bakprkr also has received donations but has a way to go. His Wishlist post has a widget which shows the progress of his fundraiser, and his blog keeps us posted about his journey!
B. Deek's Wish needs much, much more attention. Not much has been raised thus far. You may remember deek's thread from April 2012, where she asked for votes to win a new wheelchair van for her daughter. DUers voted, but she didn't win. The engine on her van died and she needs a new one now, so she turned to Wishadoo! and DU for help.
Deek is up to $315 and needs some love.
C. Silvershadow has a dream to start a non-profit organization for those who have Multiple Sclerosis and other similar neurological diseases.
D. Akoto is a wonderful DUer I've interacted with behind the scenes; a very selfless young person, usually asking on behalf of others, but has a very real need for transportation.
E. Mtnleo2 is asking for dental help for her niece, who is homeless.
F. Oak2004 has a request to help a disabled/senior housing project.
PLEASE ALSO:
* Recommend this thread and keep it kicked for visibility;
* Please scan over the Wishlist in general; some posts are simply asking for information. It's not always about money.
* ACKNOWLEDGE these courageous people who have made themselves vulnerable by asking for help. Please offer whatever support you can (information, advice, well wishes, financial or other support, etc.)
* Share Wishadoo! with others (online and in person); after all, the more who gather...

ABOUT WISHADOO!: Anyone is welcome to use the tools at Wishadoo, so long as the Terms of Service are adhered to (basically "play nice" and don't lie). This includes creating posts in the Wishlist, a "craigslist of compassion." Most of us are struggling with one thing or another, and as you'll see, there are many categories in the Wishlist to cover a variety of issues/needs.
Wishadoo! is a comprehensive portal providing tools, resources and inspiration to connect, help/be helped, and cultivate compassion, cooperation and authentic community in myriad ways, online and in our own "backyards." Wishadoo!'s tools have been designed to integrate and be of service to all sectors of community: individuals, neighborhoods, schools, organizations and businesses.
The Wishlist is where we can ask, offer, give, receive and pay it forward. If you create a Wishlist post, let me know your DU name, and I can start to do weekly or biweekly threads such as this to highlight DUers' needs and offerings.
Any contributions to Wishadoo! itself go toward the cost of maintaining the site, NOT toward any Wishlist posts. That takes place one on one, between Wishadoo! members. If you are able to help with costs to keep the site going, I'd appreciate your generosity tremendously and will be forever indebted.
