After 3-1/2 Years of Unemployment, Husband Just Got Hired! Happy V-Day, Indeed!

Last edited Thu Feb 14, 2013, 04:08 PM - Edit history (4)

Oh. My. God. I'm in tears right now. One of the companies my husband has been doing occasional contracts for called him in to tell him they're hiring him as of March 1. I'm in shock and blissful disbelief! We've struggled for so long I can't remember how it feels to just be able to have a good night's sleep. Anyway, I just wanted to share our good news with DU. What a GREAT V-Day!

Update: And I've been given a whole mess of Valentines by several DUers??? I'm literally speechless and we all know what a rarity that is. LOL! OMG. Thank you!

and the recession hit this area HARD. Our Unemployment was at 21% at one point. Plus, my husband's over 50. I can't say our economy is booming up here but I'm no longer watching dozens of places of business close, literally, every day. I'm just so very happy right now!

Even short term unemployment isn't the least bit fun, and after this length of time it must have felt almost hopeless.

My older son, with a degree in CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) three years ago, had trouble finding work in his field. It took a year, then he got a contract job. The engineering firm REALLY liked him. Should I add that he has Asperger's, which makes job hunting and interviewing a real challenge, but it also means that you just give him the work, give him the space needed, and he'll just work until it's done. Anyway, they kept on extending his contract but eventually had to let him go because they ran out of work for him. Six months later, after he'd returned to college to work on a physics degree, they called him up because they had another project for him. Which he did over the winter break from school.

So sometimes there are good employment stories, and I'm so glad you shared yours.

Thu Feb 14, 2013, 11:45 PM
Feb 2013

He had an appointment with them and thought he was just going to be given another contract (it's been one project at a time). He came home with a stunned look on his face and said, "You're not going to believe this, but they just hired me!" He was as stunned as I was. He had to tell me the salary/benefits information twice because I didn't hear him the first time. It's not as much as what he was making before he was laid off (company closed down) but I don't care! I've forgotten what it's like to have a regular paycheck. To be able to go out to dinner every once in awhile. To not get panicky when I realize I've gone over my $200.00 a month at the grocery budget. To have heat in the house (our central heat/air went out two years ago and we've been using space heaters and wall unit air conditioning).

I posted to DU and read the responses for awhile, laid down to take a nap (no sleep last night, LOL!), got up to find this still on the first page and SO MANY responses, recs and Hearts!! This is a day I'll remember for the rest of my life.

I wish you and your husband all the best.

I got hired last September after being unemployed or underemployed for the past four years. I understand the tears of relief, the tears of gratitude.

I hope you don't mind my asking but have your values changed as a result of the long dry spell? My values and priorities have changed. I no longer put as much value on "stuff" as I used to. I also feel more comfortable with change and the concept that there is no certainty in this life.
