US To Award Medals For Killing Civilians

Pentagon Creates New Medal for Cyber, Drone Wars http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article33941.htm

February 14, 2013 "AP" -- They fight the war from computer consoles and video screens.

But the troops who launch the drone strikes and direct the cyber attacks that can kill or disable an enemy may never set foot in the combat zone. Now their battlefield contributions may be recognized with the first new combat-related medal to be created in decades.

<>The new blue, red and white-ribboned Distinguished Warfare Medal will be awarded to individuals for "extraordinary achievement" related to a military operation that occurred after Sept. 11, 2001. But unlike other combat medals, it does not require the recipient risk his or her life to get it.

<>Response in the cybersphere was immediate and divided, and more often biting. While some acknowledged the contributions of cyber and drone warriors and said the award was the right thing to do, others dubbed the medal the "Geek Cross" and speculated that young video-gamers may soon get Purple Hearts for their animated wounds.

Hey now there's an idea. Let's put all those PS3 game playing basement teenagers to work. They'd probably do a better job of killing and they already have a trophy list on their PS3's so I am sure they would appreciate a (bullshit) real medal from our wonderful military. After all they would be suffering and sacrificing with blisters from all the joy stick actuation, button pushing and sores on their feet from the pedals while marching thru the swamps, jungles and hiking up mountains with 80 pounds of gear. Just think ...about the huge cost reduction in military spending. Hell the kids would probably work for free ...and we can rah rah USA USA the parents to go along with it. The whole family could be proud to serve the military without having to actually go over there and kill innocent people. What a wonderful way to kill people and not have to see all the blood and guts. Just think ...no more washing blood off your hands and changing out of those nasty blood soaked uniforms ...or cleaning guns. Nice clean wholesome family fun for everyone. They could be neighbourhood heroes. Maybe we could have a patriot award for them like a banner they could hang on the front of their house.

WTH is our fucked up country doing? Getting worse everyday.

Is anyone surprised? Once they got the worldwide criticism they are getting for their vicious drone attacks on mostly innocent civilians, they become defiant and decide to award medals for the cowardly, illegal, murderous practices that the 'left' USED TO oppose btw when Bush was doing it.

All this is is a nose thumb at all the decent people around the world who are appalled by what this country is doing.

We look worse and worse with each passing day, especially since so few Americans now bother to even try to stop what is being done in their name, many even on the 'left' actually trying to defend it.

I am for what is right ...above politics. It turns out there is much more stupid in the GOP but the Dems including Obama are not immune from being wrong ...however much the worshippers wish it were not so. Presidents end up in that DC bubble where they only hear what they are told by their aids or staff. They soon lose touch with the pulse of those who critically examine issues. I imagine it's easier for them that way.

How sad that the PTBs have so accurately figured us all out. The opposition to Bush was becoming effective. So how to stop that opposition? Well, they figured it out and like Lemmings, the people fall for it. 'Only Nixon could go to China'!

When we get smart we will not fall for the manipulation and only then will things begin to change. But for now, the people are being manipulated using 'left/right' when really, to them there is no 'left/right', only victory over the people.

When I read about this yesterday, I asked my husband--who earned a Bronze Star with a V in Vietnam--if he wanted to hear my outrage of the day. When I explained the new medal, what it is for and how it will rank above the BS, he just looked at me and shook his head with a disgusted look on his face. What an insult to those that really risk their butts on the field.

Drone operators do nothing brave or courageous. They are never in any risk. They are literally going to get medals solely for killing. It is really twisted.

Medals in many ways aren't about rewarding courage, they are about rewarding the killing of people. While some are just fine collecting a paycheck and good benefits for assisting in killing, the ones who pull the triggers require a bit more. A medal helps them feel like they have accomplished something worthwhile. That what they have done is not only justified by American society, it's praiseworthy. If that glittering piece of metal can help them deal with the ugly reality they will most likely eventually face in some quiet time of reflection, I hope it is strong enough to hold the nightmares at bay.
