(68,868 posts)Also, it's hurtful to some African-Americans to ever see that word in print.
Understand that your intent is the best, but I've run into situations where it's caused inadvertent trouble.
CatWoman
(80,288 posts)and I have more contempt for the people saying it rather than the word.

(68,868 posts)I've just had other African-Americans indicate over the years that they would prefer to never see that word in print.

I made a polite request based on my experiences with people's reaction to that word. Obviously, not all people feel that way.

(1,135 posts)Ugliness like this need's to have a bright spotlight put on it to expose it.
Just as Fox and other neo-cons repeat lies til they're believed by their base; the more we openly show this vile racism and bigotry, the more people will realize how wrong it is. Unfortunately, that's what it will take for that to happen.
I never get used to this kind of thing and always feel such a painful pang in my heart over it. Sometime I'll tell the story of how at age 14, I consciously realized my best friend was a different color than me. Pointed out by a bigot. Today is not a good day for me to do that.
Anyway, CatWoman, I admire you for what you said.

(55,981 posts)Making a deal of an appropriate use of the word detracts from the vulgarness of the inappropriate use.
IMO, and I am white, it is condescending to a degree to say n-word. It's like it absolves guilt.
It's the intent that is vulgar and not the word.
ignorance can be educated , but for stupid , there is no cure . These folks are beyond stupid . just plain hateful and dumb .

(26,877 posts)That type of despicable ugliness SHOULD be exposed far and wide. To use the N word in this regard just exposes the hate that lurks in their ugly, pathetic little hearts (and that's operating under the assumption they have a heart to begin with).

No, CW was making a salient point, and DU's resident contrarian (well, at least one one several) came and tried to poop on the thread.

(42,674 posts)I bet they thought President Obama has never heard that word before, that his wife hasn't heard it, his daughters. That they thought they were reminding him of his 'place'
His 'place' is in the White House assholes, his place is leading and representing Americans, including loathsome bigots. You're too late racists. He's the leader we the people elected. Your name calling is hurtful, if that was your intent. You got a little attention if that was what you wanted, but at the end of the day, you got nothin'
I they thought somehow, in there thought somehow in their fucked up minds that they could bring him down, instead they'll watch him rise above. Far above, and they have to know on a visceral level if nothing else, how small and petty and mean and useless they really are.

(1,924 posts)The last time someone yelled that at me, I was 7 and he was an adult, my dad whooped his ass and my mom dragged his wife down the stairs by her hair. They both said the assault charges were worth it. Even now, 23 years later I wished I could have gotten at least one kick in. But I digress, it's 2013 not 1913.

(1,924 posts)What as a parent can we do? While I appreciate what my parents did, I could never see myself going to that extreme. We almost had a case with my daughter a couple of years ago where she got into an argument with some kid, and because she's half Mexican she got called a wetback n****r. She said she took care of it by telling the other kid he was a n****r because he was ignorant and he was just confused. He transferred out of their school shortly thereafter. I never told her of my experience until then, but I think she handled it maturely. Mind you, she was barely 6. I still hope to see the day when that word is expelled from our language, but living in Texas, it may be a while.

(18,775 posts)It makes me weep, thinking about kids, especially African American kids who get to see President Obama as a role model they can relate to and have to witness THAT. That total lack of respect, even when he's achieved something as significant as becoming President and still, that shit. Ugh.
Those people need to be shamed to the point where they really have to face the ugliness in their hearts.

Education has a way of uplifting humanity, so now they degrade it as superfluous and wasteful. We are living among a hateful population like I've never before seen in my life.

(15,689 posts)The "big" crowd photos are near the Rec Ctr. "downtown", ( in connection with Decatur, we must use big and downtown advisedly) and you see some mostly college age environmental protesters mixed in with the rest of the crowd. I promise you they all voted for Obama, every one of them, whether they are holding up signs in support of green jobs and against the Keystone pipeline or not, or whether they are old white guys dressed in suits or not.
The last batch of people seen outside are in the very crunchy-granola multi ethnic neighborhood of Oakhurst where the preschool is. All shiny happy smiling faces. Oakhurst is so with-it, it has its own wikipedia page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakhurst,_Georgia
Oakhurst is an eclectic, liberal-minded community, typical of intown Atlanta. It has a diverse mix of African Americans, white residents, senior citizens, singles, young couples, young families, empty nesters, and a large gay community. According to the 2000 Census, slightly fewer than 5,000 people lived in Oakhurst.
TV crews were in both the Rec Ctr and preschool locations as you can see from the still photos - taken by tv crews. If there was any stink, they'd be on it. The young people in the crowds all have camera phones and they'd have been on it too.
This is very liberal country, Nolabear. Decatur is a small town sandwiched between two universities, swallowed up inside Atlanta. John Lewis is our Congressman. I repeat: John Lewis. If he even had a Republican opponent in the last election, nobody caught his name.
I wasn't there so I can't promise you it didn't happen, but unless you see a picture or video of the alleged incident, you really should not believe it happened and get upset over it. It's just some BS posted by a 4 post troll (literally) at Daily Kos and just not worth it.
If you browse the actual photographs in the gallery and look well, I'm sure you'll feel much better. Especially about the future.

hard. If you follow the link to the picture, you can read the URL in your browser's Location field. it is this:
www.11alive.com/images/640/360/2/assetpool/photogallery/277644/prezvisit_29 .jpg
Which is pretty obviously some sort of TV station website, and which has pretty clearly labeled this as the 29th photo in a series related to the President's visit.
You can then go directly to the main website, www.11alive.com, and follow the links to the original gallery, where you will see the photo captioned thusly:
People run up Sycamore Street to greet President Obama's motorcade (Julie Wolfe, 11Alive News)
You can furthermore move back in forth in the gallery and find another photo that shows that the people in the photo are primarily left-wing critics of the President. Which, by the way, is exactly what you'd think just from the way their appearance.
If anything unpleasant did happen, it is not documented in this particular news report.
From the comments
The crowd was upbeat, a great vibe, no evidence whatsoever of baggers or people hurling racial slurs. The only protesters I saw were some amusing folks dressed up in elephant costumes who were there to protest the Ringling Bros./Barnum & Bailey Circus and their treatment of pachyderms.
...this suspicious and unsourced diary now has 1,000 Facebook likes and 32 tips despite the fact its author, who has a breif record of incendiary posts, has not graced us with the update that he promised.

(978 posts)The Tea Bag people are racists. Plain and simple.
They can sugar coat it complaining about an "overspending government" for their reason to protest
But the fact remains their little party started as soon as Obama was elected before he had a chance to enact his policies.
They didn't form when Bush was spending billions on the wars and the billions spent on the Bush Tax cuts and plunging the country into a big deficit. They didn't complain when Cheney said the "deficit didn't matter." No siree. They formed when Obama was elected. They didn't like the black man in office.
They are racists through and through. And I don't mind telling it to their face. I've done it on some of their FaceBook pages. They get angry but that's their problem. It's their people shouting out racist remarks.

(1,289 posts)And including the ugly word uncensored. 25 years ago I might have been the guy shouting that word. Today I winced when I saw it spelled out in print here. It serves as a reminder just how far this ol white country boy has come over those years.
