(29,095 posts)Can they stand on their hind legs like that?
It's AWESOMELY cute, but if it's real, it should
merit some sort of wide recognition or prize.

It has been reported that the original photograph (which does not include the kitten) dates from 2007.

(146,333 posts)I used to feed the raccoons at my home in California. My cats got along fine with them, and there was lots of nose-sniffing between the two species.
At one point, I had a family of six visiting my back door. All would take peanuts in the shell from my hand, then sit and eat them right on the spot. Very gentle critters, they were, and very polite.
OTOH, I got back from a party one night, and momma raccoon and her babies were all sacked out on my living room couch. They'd come in through the cat flap after not getting their customary feeding that evening. They left through the cat flap when we got home, but in a leisurely way. No problems.

(146,333 posts)They got along just fine. So, you may be right, but it all depends, I guess.

(146,333 posts)not hungry for cat. They had ample food from other sources. They and our cats interacted peacefully for several years, and our cats lived into their 20s.
Note that I'm not recommending anything. I'm just describing what happened at my home in California.

(146,333 posts)They came into the house fairly often. When they did, they polished off any dry cat food that was out, and then left politely. During good weather our front door was usually open, and a raccoon would often appear around the time when I usually put food out for them and look in on us to let us know they were there. When they did come into the house, they always were on their best visiting behavior, and never got rowdy or destructive.
I don't recommend that people do this, by any means. I'm sort of an animal tamer guy. I also could go into the yard, hold peanuts or a handful of bird seed out in my hand and blue jays and other birds would fly down and sit on my hand to eat them. It's just something I do with the wild animals around places I live. They must think I'm an OK human and tell all their friends, because the numbers just kept growing.

How amazing to have had racoons in your life like that.
Soooooo cute!

(146,333 posts)Have always come to me. I do not know why. One time in a pine forest in Caifornia, far from any populated place, a deer and two fawns walked right up to me in my campsite early in the morning. I got to rub all of their heads and ears before the wandered off. I cannot explain it. I have met many wild animals like that.

(7,237 posts)I have accidentally trapped many racoons (in humane box traps) when trying to trap feral cats (for spay/neuter).
It is kind of funny when they wander into the trap. They don't freak out at all when it closes, they just chill and eat all the bait, and then look around like: "Hmmm... seem to have gotten myself into a bit of a fix here."
(Cats, on the other hand, flip the fuck out when the trap door closes. It is quite a marked difference.)
