Boy, how did we miss THIS?

"The Alabama House of Representatives is set to vote on abortion legislation Tuesday that would impose a variety of unnecessary restrictions on abortion clinics: providers would need to have admitting privileges at local hospitals (not such an easy feat when your local hospital thinks abortion is murder), clinics would have to follow needlessly prohibitive building codes, and nurses, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants would be charged with a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison for dispensing abortion-inducing medications to patients.
Most of those are the good ol' TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) standbys we're familiar with; Mississippi might lose its only abortion clinic because of similar legislation. But bill sponsor Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin came up with a creative defense for her legislation that we don't think we've heard before. From the Montgomery Advertiser:
"When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body," McClurkin said in an interview Thursday. "That's a big thing. That's a big surgery. You don't have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that."
My liver, heart, and skin are all very excited that we are now giving organs personhood rights, although the latter is slightly upset about losing out on its "largest organ in the human body" rep."

Nice working with you, 'trof'.

J.D.'s comments from his blog:
"The skin is usually known as the body's biggest organ - they say the average person wears about 8 pounds of it. I clocked in at about 7 1/2 pounds, so I wasn't quite the biggest of my mom's organs. But my sister Nonny was a 10-pound whopper. Please, not a word of this to her. You know how sensitive women are about their weight.
So, if babies are organs and organs are babies, does that mean an appendectomy is the same thing as an abortion? Are tonsils twins? My head hurts.
The Alabama House of Representatives is discussing abortion legislation today. McClurkin and other supporters of HB 57 claim this bill is not meant to stop abortions, but to protect patients in clinics. Opponents fear this bill will shut down abortion providers and lead to costly lawsuits.
Not sure how this "abortion-safety" bill will play out, but one thing is certain: We can always look forward to learning new things about the human body when legitimate politicians start talking about anatomy.

(54,274 posts)I asked him to speak at our annual Democrats' Jefferson-Jackson banquet.
He was a riot.
He sat at my table and we had a long chat before he spoke.
I asked him how he got hired by the conservative Register.
He grinned and said "I think it was part of their affirmative action program to hire minorities.
I'm the token liberal, but I'll swear I never said that."
On coming to Alabama from Kentucky:
"I was THRILLED! Editorial cartoonists need material, and Alabama's politics and politicians provide a target rich environment."
