PAGE, Ariz. -
A 'geologic event' closed a northern Arizona highway Wednesday, after a 150-foot section of pavement buckled. U.S. 89 in northern Arizona is closed in both directions about 25 miles south of Page. Residents in the area reported what they thought was an earthquake Wednesday morning, but geologists say it was a landslide. The Arizona Department of Transportation says the buckling was not related to the weather.
The call came in around 4:30 a.m. There were a few minor accidents as a result.

According to ADOT, it isn't known how long the stretch of U.S. 89 will remain closed south of Page. Crews are on the scene deploying geotechnical engineers to investigate

(56,177 posts)shape...all they did was put up signs warning of "rough" road...that's what happens when you use all your tax money to round up people you don't like.

(825 posts)and you will praise Arizona's roads.
Hell, I live on a dirt road in Arizona (15 miles of it) and it is kept smoother that interstate 40 in California. All California has done with that road in 10 years is put up "rough road" signs.
The road near Page that screwed up was from a landslide and that can happen most anywhere except maybe Kansas.

(56,177 posts)That was the part that was really, really bad. Whenever I visit friends in LA I'm amazed at how the streets are...they haven't done maintenance there in quite some time.

(825 posts)and the roads there are just terrible.
Interstate 40 from Barstow to The Arizona state line is really bad. When I cross into Arizona I breath a sigh of relief. When you get to the mountains east of Kingman there a lot of potholes because of the trucks and freezing but they do repair them in good order come springtime.
Interstate 10 from San Bernardino to Palm Springs will beat you badly and has for at least 25 years. Again, when you cross into Arizona, it makes one ask "why doesn't California fix their roads."

(56,177 posts)It seems recently they've sucked...mainly because they didn't have the money.

(3,526 posts)....but, if you travel in ANY state these days, you're going to hit bad stretches of road no matter where you go. A public works program like FDR initiated during the Great Depression would work wonders for the infrastructure and employ millions of people.
