Woman 'shot' and wounded as she cooks a snack after bullets left in her oven explode

A woman cooking herself a snack has been wounded after the bullets her roommate left inside the oven exploded and sprayed her with shrapnel.

Aalaya Walker, 18, preheated the oven of her apartment in Tampa, Florida, on Monday to make herself waffles - not knowing that Javarski 'JJ' Sandy, 25, had stashed his pistol magazine with four live rounds in the appliance.

Ms Walker was hit in the chest and the leg by shrapnel from at least one round.

Mr Sandy, who legally owns a .45-caliber Glock 21 semiautomatic pistol, told police he took the magazine out of his gun and put it in the oven. He put the gun itself in a drawer, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Big firecrackers surrounded by brass.

"Ms Walker said she picked brass shell casing fragments out of her skin as she rode the bus to the hospital.

Officers described her injuries as 'superficial' and not life threatening."

that news of gun violence and gun-related accidents has become so commonplace that the only part of this story that gave me pause was wondering why she would preheat her oven to make waffles.

This is just a load of shit. When a bullet get hot enough to go off on its own it simply ruptures the case, with nary a bit of shrapnel. and in fact doesn't even make a very loud noise. There is simply not a chance in hell that anyone protected by the metal of an oven would be harmed by one going rupturing.

I had considered that the magazine would enhance the effect but I see no way a polymer mag could assist a pressure build up to cause a greater explosion. Metal would not work either as the gasses would merely be directed, not increased in pressure.

Their story also leaves me wondering why he had four rounds in a magazine built for thirteen? My magazines are either empty or full to capacity.

Maybe it held the round steady enough that when it cooked off it was directed moreso than a loose round would be?

that the magazine was strong enough to keep the bullet in the case long enough for a bit more pressure to build. It seems unlikely but I am not going to try and duplicate it like mythbusters

There are many things about this story that don't sit well with me, but this is near the top of the list.
Put the gun in a drawer, but put the clip (not just the bullets, but the magazine too) in the oven. I'd have to be pretty fucking high to conceive of and act upon something like that.

People are fucking stupid. And accidents with guns happen all the time. So we need to have many, many fewer guns in the hands of the public.
