With Ron Paul ascending in Iowa, winning the hearts of independents, and even the endorsement of Andrew Sullivan, its worth pointing something out: Ron Paul is not a kindly old libertarian who just wants everybody to be free. Hes a really creepy bigot.
Around four years ago, James Kirchick reported a lengthy story delving into Pauls worldview. As Kirchick writes, Paul comes out of an intellectual tradition called paleolibertarianism, which is a version of libertarianism heavily tinged with far-right cultural views. The gist is that Paul is tied in deep and extensive ways to neo-Confederates, and somewhat less tightly to the right-wing militia movement. His newsletter, which he wrote and edited for years, was a constant organ of vile racism and homophobia. This is not just picking out a phrase here and there. Fear and hatred of blacks and gays, along with a somewhat less pronounced paranoia about Jewish dual loyalty, are fundamental elements of his thinking. The most comparable figure to Paul is Pat Buchanan, the main differences being that Paul emphasizes economic issues more, and has more dogmatically pro-market views.
How, then, has Paul become a figure of admiration among social liberals?
One reason is that nobody is attacking him. Paul is (correctly) considered to have no chance to actually win the GOP nomination, so debate moderators have not bothered to research his past, instead tossing off generalized questions that allow him to portray himself on his preferred terms. The Republican Establishment is focusing all its fire on Newt Gingrich, and indeed, Pauls rise in Iowa would greatly aid Mitt Romneys campaign by preventing an acceptable alternative from emerging from the state with momentum.

(9,933 posts)Bringing him on their shows. Too many democrats think he's okay because he was against the Iraq war and never look further into his dangerous views.

(25,406 posts)If Paul can get 15-20% of the delegates and deny Newt and Mitt a first ballot victory, he'll hang on to them all the way to the convention like a pit bull on a pork chop. If I got called by a pollster, I'd fake a Repugasm and tell them I support Paul!
It might even be worth re-registering just to pull the lever for Paul, just to screw up the Republicons.

(36,649 posts)Basic facts: Ron Paul wants to get rid of the govt that regulates & polices the top 1% and multinational corporations. He wants to get rid of the govt that ensures that fairness & justice prevails. He wants govt needs to exist - and be even more powerful - to enforce the will of the corporatocracy against recalcitrant individuals.
Ron Paul believes that corporations have the right to enslave you, and you have the right to starve & die if they don't.

(1,569 posts)Libertarians are fascists. LOL. I disagree with libertarians, but that disagreement has never made me unnecessarily make things up just to call names. So your saying if you run for president that means you don't want to get rid of the government? Well I guess we have nothing to worry about from any of the Paul! And what part does Paul want to get rid of that stops fascism for occurring? Is it the foreign military bases? The MIC? The War on Drugs? TARP? Are these the things that prevent fascism? LOL.
I'll leave this thread for you because drawing attention to your unbelievably ignorant claims makes DU look bad. I would be embarrassed to send friends here and see posts like yours.

(6,161 posts)The politicians that keep saying our government is broken are the ones that are breaking it.
Also, idol worship is not my style. You're blushing. Ron Paul is a CAREER POLITICIAN.
It's the regulations he wants to get rid of. The consumer protections. The environmental protections. So Wages could drop. Corporations can run amok. And our environment can look like scorched earth.
EDIT: Look at my post count-3,877 than look at YOURS-97. Who's trolling?

Paul says that just because someone needs medical care doesn't mean that they have a right to have it. Anyone, especially a *doctor*, who holds such a view, is evil personified.
And Paul calls himself a 'libertarian' but he is totally anti-choice on the abortion issue, for example.

(3,574 posts)Usually go like this - "Ron Paul is great because ( ). Followed by a disclaimer - "I do not support Ron Paul". Then most of the people who comment on the op have a "friend or relative who is a Paul supporter, whose arguments they cannot refute", This op is a refreshing exception. This is not the Ron Paul underground.

There are dangers in progressives seeking common cause with the likes of Paul; those who lie with dogs tend to get up with fleas, and there is no room in any progressive movement for ultranationalism, xenophobia, or hard-line economic laissez-faire views.
