Firebrand ex-Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL), running to reclaim his seat in 2012, told TPM that Mitt Romneys fans shouldnt get too excited about his Tuesday win. The real issue was Gingrichs lousy campaign.
I think that in the end the Not-Romney vote was unwilling to coalesce around Newt Gingrich, Grayson said. His flaws, politically and personally, become more obvious as it went on and its a personal rejection of him. Theres tremendous reservation about Romney, the majority are not happy with the choices left.
Either way, he said, the GOP is leaving Florida worse than it arrived.
I think there has been lasting damage, he said. I think that when Newt Gingrich parades around the country saying Mitt Romney is a liar and Mitt Romney parades around country saying Newt Gingrich is a liar, the conclusion most people draw is theyre both liars.

Newts negatives are astronomical theyre approaching his name recognition at this point and Romneys are also very high. I doubt well see them go down, he said. Mitt romney has been exposed, like a character out of Orphan Annie, Daddy Warbucks, as an enormously wealthy person out of touch with ordinary Americans who simply wants to be president, as far as we can tell, because he wants to be President.

(20,851 posts)This is the party. The fact people are going out and voting for these people tells you all you need to about the Republican party. How damaged is it? Hard to say since they took back the house in 2010. For some reason Americans are ever slow to realize the Republican party is hopelessly not representing actual Americans, unless corporation ARE people and international corporation ARE Americans. If the last 30 years haven't destroyed the Republican party is a pointless contest between terrible candidates really going to hurt the party. People that vote Republican seem to have an amazing short sighted memory. Basically some time this summer FOX news and other sources will talk about how incredibly unified the Republican party is and was throughout the whole nomination contest and the people that vote Republican will nod their heads and go yip that's how I remember it. If you're still voting Republican now, you've somehow bought into whatever Mitt, Newt, Paul and the circus is selling. These guys don't suck any worse than Bush, Delay and the rest of the greedy rich idiots they had last decade.

If they did it once they will do it again.
I really hate to contradict Grason but that's how I see it.
