UVM will end Coca-Cola contract, ban sale of bottled water
The University of Vermont will allow its 10-year contract with Coca-Cola to lapse on July 1, opening up the campus to other vendors, banning the sale of bottled water, and mandating the offering of healthy options in vending machines.
Under the exclusive contract, Coca-Cola had paid UVM $482,000 per year for exclusive pouring rights. UVM will forgo that revenue but expects to recoup some of it from new contracts to be negotiated with other vendors.
The end of UVMs exclusive arrangement with a major bottler comes after years of lobbying by students, who have waged campaigns urging a bottled-water ban and criticizing the Coca-Cola Corp. The 10-year contract with Coca-Cola of Northern New England permitted the company to provide all beverages in vending machines and 80 percent of the bottled drinks served in residence halls and other venues, for a total of about 1.1 million bottles annually, UVM said.

(16,199 posts)Our local Tim Horton's closed due to poor sales. It was said they sold a stronger coffee than the locals liked.
We have the same spread of stores here in Conn. Very few starbucks or 7-elevens, but tons of Dunkin Donuts.

What's the secret of keeping them out? Ordinances and/or zoning? Real estate prices? Mandated minimum wages?

(9,942 posts)Oregon. The winters are too harsh out here in VT. And everything that's good about VT is just as good or better in OR. The moutains are bigger, the trees are bigger, and there are more PLUs (people like us) (hippies).
