Theme: "A PHOTOGRAPHER'S FAVORITE"
We who take photos sometimes end up with a shot we love and want to show off.
No rhyme or reason to it oftentimes, mostly it is just personal.
It may not fit into the theme of a contest, and we forget about it. So this month we dusted off our archives and pulled out a favorite to post for everybody to see and vote on.
We have 3 preliminary threads, as always. Please take the time to vote in all 3 of them. If the recommendations get to be numerous, I think the threads will come out to the front page, so please recommend and kick the threads.

We really appreciate your interest and participation, and we love having this opportunity to show off our passion/hobby/love as represented in our photographs.
The preliminaries will run for 3 days. The finals will start on the 21st and run for 3 days.
Then I'll announce the winners.
Skinner has authorized this contest to be run in GD.

both just amaze me. Perfection. Perfect timing. Perfect lighting. Chills. Awe. In very different ways. I've switched my vote to Curtain. It just gets to me and stays with me.

(22,541 posts)Gave me chills. It makes me wonder where she is. The sheer beauty of the composition puts curtain in the category of serious art. OTOH the owl was definitely a situation where the photographer had to be good enough right there and right then to capture it perfectly.
Two great talents of a photographer. If they were done by the same person, would you say that Curtain builds on the talent shown in Owl?

(68,287 posts)There is something a bit Hitchcock-ian about both of them, altho more so with Curtain. Owls are pretty dramatic and fierce in just about everything they do, whereas it is the composition of Curtain, as you point out, that is so stunning.
As for that shoe, do you know Delacroix's "Women of Algiers"? At the bottom of the painting, one of the women has kicked off her shoe and it lies on the floor. Cezanne remarked that the shoe was "like a shot of red wine down the throat..." I thought of that when I saw Curtain...

(22,541 posts)Yes. It's like that. Something that shouldn't make such an impact but does. Hitchcockian. That is it! I would group them together if I could at a gallery.
I'd like to imagine the house in curtain Curtain as the one in Panes of Gold. I want it to be sitting on a mountaintop in Misty Solitude. Inside the house lives the cat in Portrait of Intensity along with the woman who belongs to the shoe. That Owl sails through the woods in Misty Solitude as well. He and the cat wouldn't like each other much. There's a detached garage where the love automobile, The Decadence of Color, waits to be driven.
So, that's my grouping and my story.

(22,690 posts)That is the reason I post them as they come in, in order to not influence anything and just allow them to fall as they may.
Once I used a random generator, and was accused of manipulating placement
I think the only other way that is totally random and unimpeachable is to make a thread of each third photo etc.
I think we have glorious photos here, throughout.
Including yours
(to those who don't know, and read this, I am the ONLY person who knows the names of the photographers. We don't often make a contest double blind to everybody except the host, but I thought it was worth the anonymity for the sake of people showing their hearts on their sleeves with what they LOVE)

Wow. Everyone is so impressive.

(8,554 posts)(including owls), that Great Horned Owl picture is awe-inspiring! Whoever took that should submit it to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for their "All About Birds" website. My god, you can even see his tongue, mouth wide open!
Incredible photo!
Minus that owl picture, this panel would have been tough enough to choose which one to vote for...beautiful photography, all...but after a lifetime of birdwatching, my owl-spirit cannot help but soar along with whoever that mighty bird was looking at.

(60,167 posts)That one moment caught so clearly...wow.
Reminded me of watching the Blue Angels in SF.
We were sitting on a high hill overlooking the city and the jets roaring, in formation, below us.
But none of my pics caught them as close as the pic above.
