Remember Balpreet Kaur, the young Sikh woman ridiculed...

because of facial hair via a reddit post months ago?

Talk about Grace and Compassion in Action.

Well, she's being recognized for it.

"Approximately five months ago, an example of the cruelty which can arise as a result of online anonymity manifested when a member of the reddit community posted a picture of a young woman, mocking her because of facial hair.

Balpreet Kaur is the young woman in question; she happens to be a Sikh. Her eloquent response to a tasteless online post targeting her facial hair and beard garnered thousands of responses from around the world on various websites which picked up the story. Read her initial full response here.

Now, Ms. Kaur, a sophomore at Ohio State University studying neuroscience and international development, and Hana Strickland, a third-year political science and international studies major at OSU, passionate about peace building, are the first winners of Ohio State University’s new undergraduate Peace Awards. Each receive a $500 scholarship for tuition and fees.

Kaur was nominated because of her contributions to religious dialogue and interfaith understanding, Bezeredi said. Her promotion of tolerance was put to a personal test in the fall when another student posted a photo of her on Reddit’s “funny thread,” prompting a string of cruel comments about her sideburns and beard. Instead of getting upset by the post, Kaur turned it into a teaching moment."

What a wonderful human being. I'm glad to see she is being recognized for it. These are the kind of stories we need to bring attention to and give less attention to the hateful ones. It is people like her that truly change the world.

If any of the women that put her down were young, well when you get older and your hormones stop working , surprise you will understand what she has went through, trust me being an older woman and having seen and been friends with many others, not one older woman escapes it. So they can enjoy being nasty and small minded and then Karma will catch them. I hope they also get bushy eyebrows, LOL.

Both were subjected to bullying by other students. One survived. The other didn't.

Could college orientation programs be improved to include references to these incidents?

High school and college (shoot, middle school, too).

There are school districts implementing anti-bullying programs ; the earlier they start, the better.

I hear you.
