Weird propaganda, and the media ate it up (not even mentioning Mission Accomplished)--we should have all been warned that they were "creating their own reality", just like PNAC said.

But they didn't do it alone. So many helped them along the way. The most important ally they had was the Corporate Media who should also be tried for spreading propaganda.

(57,936 posts)I don't think you have to join anything or admit to anything to answer for international crimes. And the International Criminal Court did not exist when we held the Nuremburg trials of NAZI war criminals.
Seems to me if we are not members of the International Criminal Court, Americans who commit war crimes could still be subject to international prosecution.
It is rather ironic that our government claims the authority to kill by drone and without trial our own nationals who plot with Al Qaeda against us, but thinks somehow that Americans who similarly act outside the bounds of international law an human decency cannot be prosecuted simply because we did not join the International Criminal Court.
Seems to me that the Court will decide over whom it has jurisdiction. Criminals usually don't just give themselves up. Sometimes they do, but not all that often.
Solly Mack
(90,792 posts)The Court can exercise jurisdiction only when: the accused is a national of a state party (ICC member), if the alleged crime took place on the territory of a state party (member state) and/or if referred to the Court by the United Nations Security Council. The UNSC has 5 permanent members (US, China, UK, France, Russian Federation) - any of which can veto an action. So...the US would veto any such undertaking.
A state not party to the ICC can still request the court to investigate by accepting the jurisdiction of the court. How likely is that to happen?
There is still universal jurisdiction, which would allow for other countries prosecuting America's war criminals. If they would just do it. The CAT (Convention Against Torture) requires universal jurisdiction of its signatories.
The US rejects UI, claiming fear of "political prosecutions" by other states. However, the US does claim the right to exercise universal jurisdiction in civil torts for violations of human rights, etc.. Go figure.
The biggest issue is no one (who can) is demanding prosecutions.
Also, we have to factor in all the hypocrisy. Sadly. (Nuremberg-like Trials for some, not for others)

Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)There was no profit goal. Well, there was, but it was secondary, a perk, if it could be accomplished.
The goal was exactly what happened. The obliteration of a nation. Remember how our Talking Shitheads were striving for a tripartate state, dividing it up between Kurds, Shia and Sunni? That was an effort to create a Mesopotamian Balkan state, of three-way warfare destabilizing the other region and drawing in other middle eastern nations.
Now look at Syria. Look at the drumming for war with Iran.
There's a plan there. It's not profits, it's not oil, it's sure as fuck not "liberation." We're there to destroy. To wipe nations off the map. Why? I honestly haven't figured that out yet, my best guess at the moment is that we're making sure nations we have no use for don't fall under anyone else's influence, either.

A nuclear Iran would be a threat to the United States, our allies, the region, and the world. I believe the United States must take the necessary steps to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and I support the approach President Obama joined by a bipartisan consensus in Congress has taken in working to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. I support the Administrations policy of a tough bilateral and multilateral sanctions regime. We have the toughest sanctions we have ever had against Iran, and I will work to make them even tougher. That not only means developing new sanctions, it means vigorously enforcing existing ones.

(62,325 posts)Nixon gave the order to send the National Guard to Kent State. The biggest and most tragic dereliction of duty ever seen in this country was when Nixon and his band of crooks were not prosecuted. THAT gave them the green light to continue their evil policies and part of their mission after Nixon was forced out of office may well have been to give the finger to all those they considered responsible for his political downfall.
And then our brilliant, 'moral' leaders did it again when they allowed the Reagan traitors off the hook also.
I'm sure there is more to our Government's repeated failure to prosecute War Criminals than we know. But it seems to me that it is deliberate and the only reason for that could be that War Crimes are US policy and in their view, that means none of these crooks did anything wrong. I'm sure every evil war criminal shared that view of themselves.

(90,792 posts)Mr. Cheney the congressman believed that Congress had usurped executive prerogatives. He saw the Iran-contra investigation not as an effort to get to the bottom of possible abuses of power but as a power play by Congressional Democrats to seize duties and responsibilities that constitutionally belonged to the president.
At the conclusion of the hearings, a dissenting minority report codified these views. The reports chief author was a former resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Michael J. Malbin, who was chosen by Mr. Cheney as a member of the committees minority staff. Another member of the minoritys legal staff, David S. Addington, is now the vice presidents chief of staff.
The minority report stressed the charge that the inquiry was a sham, calling the majority reports allegations of serious White House abuses of power hysterical. The minority admitted that mistakes were made in the Iran-contra affair but laid the blame for them chiefly on a Congress that failed to give consistent aid to the Nicaraguan contras and then overstepped its bounds by trying to restrain the White House.

(493 posts)The Last Letter
A Message to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney From a Dying Veteran
To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young
I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.
I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us allthe human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.
I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americansmy fellow veteranswhose future you stole.
Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage.
I joined the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks. I joined the Army because our country had been attacked. I wanted to strike back at those who had killed some 3,000 of my fellow citizens. I did not join the Army to go to Iraq, a country that had no part in the September 2001 attacks and did not pose a threat to its neighbors, much less to the United States. I did not join the Army to liberate Iraqis or to shut down mythical weapons-of-mass-destruction facilities or to implant what you cynically called democracy in Baghdad and the Middle East. I did not join the Army to rebuild Iraq, which at the time you told us could be paid for by Iraqs oil revenues. Instead, this war has cost the United States over $3 trillion. I especially did not join the Army to carry out pre-emptive war. Pre-emptive war is illegal under international law. And as a soldier in Iraq I was, I now know, abetting your idiocy and your crimes. The Iraq War is the largest strategic blunder in U.S. history. It obliterated the balance of power in the Middle East. It installed a corrupt and brutal pro-Iranian government in Baghdad, one cemented in power through the use of torture, death squads and terror. And it has left Iran as the dominant force in the region. On every levelmoral, strategic, military and economicIraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.
I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.
I have, like many other disabled veterans, suffered from the inadequate and often inept care provided by the Veterans Administration. I have, like many other disabled veterans, come to realize that our mental and physical wounds are of no interest to you, perhaps of no interest to any politician. We were used. We were betrayed. And we have been abandoned. You, Mr. Bush, make much pretense of being a Christian. But isnt lying a sin? Isnt murder a sin? Arent theft and selfish ambition sins? I am not a Christian. But I believe in the Christian ideal. I believe that what you do to the least of your brothers you finally do to yourself, to your own soul.
My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness.
http://www.truthdig.com/dig/item/the_last_letter_20130318/
God bless you and thank you for your courage, honesty and above all the ability to rise up beyond those who are guilty and must remain wallowing in their own cesspool of faux self-righteousness.

(4,858 posts)...always. Think of everything this past fifty years--Dallas. Vietnam. Nixon's 1968 treason. Reagan/Bush's 1980 treason. Iran-Contra. Impeaching the President of the United States over a blow job. The theft of the 2000 election. The Iraq War. The outing of a CIA agent--more treason. The destruction of the economy in 2008, and the general looting of the country. When are "They" *ever* brought to justice?
Just once. Watergate. And even here, this was only because Nixon had pissed off too many of the other institutions of power, like the CIA and FBI, both of which maneuvered to bring him down. And he, of course, was pardoned by Ford. And both the GOP and the media learned their lessons--never to permit it to happen again. The Watergate scandal, of course, could not happen today.
"They" got away with it all. "They" will *always* get away with it. It would require revolution in the US--not an election, the real thing, 1789-style--to change this. And who could want such a thing? If this all sounds pretty pessimistic, well, that's because it is... ...

There was a whole lot of Greatest Generation Envy going on at the time, with politicians and the newsmedia.
When those reporters sat down like meek little mice at that press conference and quietly agreed not to ask questions, they all walked out trying to look as if they had just taken part in some solemn, historic turning point. They really imagined themselves witnesses to history. They probably all imagined they'd be publishing momentous tomes about their front seat to history, or something.

(6,929 posts)Like spittle inducing rage. Those motherfuckers. All those people killed. For nothing. All those people tortured. And we prance around the world like we are some sort of moral authority. And, another thing. I KNEW the Bushies were lying. I knew it. How did I know it? Me, some nobody from Nowheresville, Ohio? Because, you never trust the official line. Never. It is not believing in conspiracies either, it is realizing that there is no way in hell the government is going to tell its citizens what is really going on. Never, ever. Everyone lies. Even the good guys. Keep that in mind for the next big adventure.
