First, the paintings are a lot better than I would have expected -- better than I could do. They obviously aren't masterpieces, but nothing to be embarrassed about.

And maybe he chose pets as a subject just to give some consistency to his practice of skills. If somebody had told me that Bush was paint, I would have guessed it would be pictures of Saddam's head coming off as he was hanged or some other dark scenes. This couldn't be farther from those dark places. I wonder if there is something to that.

It's that the guy who painted them is the freak. It's like the John Wayne Gacy paintings. The worth comes from who painted them, not their quality. Some people get a kick out of owning things made by a famous mass murderer, and some people still think George Bush was a great President.

27. Of course it's "who" --
Thu Mar 21, 2013, 09:55 AM

but what's the market?

The people who think W was a great president want a signed celebrity photo or a commemorative plate with real gold edges. Not a yard sale puppy.

The people who think he was a mass murderer want water-boarded puppies and Laura chewing their heads off.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's a market for this schlock, even by the Resident. It's a (dep)recession. Somehow I don't think McMansion owners are the right demographic.

I'm sick of that whole damned family and I just want our stupid media to stop giving them any attention at all. Sorry - that goes for the vapid Jenna Bush too. She did another fluff piece on the Today Show about motherhood and of course she had to drag her vapid mother into the piece. Get them out of our lives already.

Still, at least he is off the national stage...

On that score, I had a horrific and very real dream that I'd "gone up" against Cheney last night (and he prevailed, naturally)... I'm not sure what the venue (court? public debate? other?), but just remember him prevailing once again against the odds.

That a recent former president would disengage from the world to this extent and paint shells and puppies is evidence of something about him that should be discussed.

It is either extreme head-in-the sand disengagement after holding the most powerful post in the world and still holding great potential for influence....which is an unflattering statement that we should pay attention to

or

It is a sharp, insightful statement by him about the rigors and out-of-scale degree of power and destruction that the office has...that a world leader with hundreds of thousands of deaths on his hands as well as the cultural and physical destruction of a once-proud country (among many misdeeds) would, instead of traveling the world to do good or instead of painting something of interest that reflects his former life, go the other way and paint the most harmless sugary subjects possible is a powerful effective statement about his former life and this one. It is high, unexpected, intentional, brilliant art that requires a contrarian reading.

Either way, it's interesting. Given what we know about him his entire life, I think we can interpret the pieces accordingly and it's not flattering.

sitting in his small cell scratching bad pictures of jets and tanks on his concrete wall with the words Pew! Peeeeew! Pew! scribbled next to the lines of bullets coming from them.

I suppose puppies and kitties allow him to think he is A-OK rather than confronting his crimes. I can't imagine what I would do in his situation, probably drink myself to death. Somehow I don't think puppy and kitty pictures would do the trick.

they will sell the originals and prints of his pics to raise money to fund Jeb's run for the presidency.

Think of how many Repugs would want to have one of his works gracing their walls.

Some marketing firm will push this and they will raise a lot of money doing this.

Now I know I wouldn't touch any of his works with a ten foot pole and probably most people wouldn't either. However, there will be a significant group of people out there that will think that having one of his works will be cool and they will pay dearly to have one.

This is my prediction.
