I'm tired of constantly having to filter through hidden agenda, omission or slant in news reporting. It really makes one weary. Any media network that is actually still objective and unbiased and ethical?
Doesn't matter if it's conservative bias, libertarian bias, or any other bias - I want news to be just that - news.

(4,686 posts)To call MSNBC the network of Liberals is factually false.
Morning Joe- This show is hosted by a conservative. With their mix of Conservative and Liberal guests the show can provide great balance. No show on any cable news outlet gets so many primary guests from the Left and Right. BTW... Morning Joe is on for 3 hours in one of the most coveted time slots in News. That's not exactly what a network geared entirely to left wing politics would do. And there is no equivalent show on FOX.
First Read (With Chuck Todd)- Would anyone even dare to call this a liberal show? If anything, Chuck Todd was one of the key voices trying to find scenarios for Romney to win. GOP guests abound this show. This show is politically neutral at best.
The Andrea Mitchell News Hour- Enough said here. If anything this show belongs on FOX
News Nation with Tamron Hall- Just because she is black doesn't mean she can't be objective. She delivers the news straight. And has very big guests on from the both the left and right. BTW... there was no show on cable news that touted the bogus Gallup polls during the election than this show did. Romney's polling lead on Obama through Gallup was reported more on this show than it was on FOX.
The Chris Mathews Show- Ask any liberal here about Chris Mathews and they will give you a very different opinion from the general public who claim he is a flaming liberal. The truth is Mathews voted for Bush in at least one election. And he says that on TV all the time. Again, GOP guest abound his show and include New Gingrich who is is a frequent contributor.
These shows are just a few examples.
The problem with news today is that the GOP is so crazy and has spent a generation spewing so much propaganda, that standard news is now considered left wing.
For instance to say, that 92% of Americans support gun background checks... well that's news. That's factual. Thats not a left wing talking point. In fact to not report this is to censor very topical information to help support a cause that has no statistical public backing.
Last night MSNBC ran Hubris, the story of the Iraq War. They then had a panel discussion. This too was not a left wing liberal hit piece. It was fact. It was news. It was the kind of reporting the media should have been doing 10 years ago. If more journalists had done their job objectively, Hubris would have aired 10 years ago. And maybe a ruthless regime would not have killed 100s of thousands of people and spent trillions of dollars for a war that never should have been fought.
What has happened in this country is that the right has done such a good job bashing the media and selling its propaganda, that today the general public doesn't even recognize was real news is anymore. Its actually very sad.

(24,096 posts)and they kept Mr. Tingly Legs fawning over the Mass Murdering Pretzeldent.
They are owned by GE, who get some nice cash to jam in their jeans when there is war.
There is no fair media - any of those that take money for commercials or are owned by military interests will not be fair. I'd rather trust a neighbour that reads a lot about various issues than these paid for clowns.

(26,314 posts)What you describe is a balancing of bias not even an effort toward objectivity, reporting of observation, and/or fact finding.
It seems to me you have the good sense to know that FOX is bullshit but still couldn't escape the gravity well of their "Fair and Balanced" nonsense and worse have swallowed that punditry is reasonable substitute for reporting. I'm fine with punditry but that shit is for digesting and debating information rather than disseminating it. By allowing all information to come from editorial and editorial from second hand and consequentially filter and controlled sources.
MSNBC is an incorrect answer to the question because the level of partisan balance in talking heads editorializing and/or debating isn't meaningful to objectivity, subject control, and reporting of facts.
If the question was where can I find a balance of beltway partisan opinion if I watch it from 5am-11pm, you'd have a compelling answer.
The meat of the question to use a sports metaphor is where can I find play by play that isn't dominated by the color commentary from wherever along the spectrum. The substance of your answer was that MSNBC has the best balance of commentary though I'll agree that Hall and a few other spots actually lean toward actual news reporting better than most but suffer from pretty much reporting opinions in a balanced fashion because of the big fundamental flaw of little to no reporting.
Maddow is excellent at digging into issues and giving quality editorial that makes facts digestible but the show by nature is not real time world events oriented, it is a political program not geared to presenting the facts before they drive agenda.
I think the best answer is there isn't any and one must actively seek information and dig and mine it from a broad set of sources and then you still will have to rely heavily on logic, discernment, and knowledge to filter it all out.
We are functioning in a corporate dominated system of propaganda and opinion shaping, there is little to no effort being made to inform the populace and some of what is there is a backstop to cope with the reality that information undesirable to that system surfaces and that everyone isn't going to swallow whatever they are fed so they must be controlled and coped with while maintaining the internal consistency of the overall agenda.

(31,493 posts)To say that it is just news without a theme, it might as well be 24/7 Lindsey Lohan. You know what you are getting if you watch E-tainment news. When you watch abc cbs nbc you know there will be a dog and pony show at the end of the time slot. Take Democracy Now ..."the war and peace report", might be more unbiased because it is clearly stating its purpose. FOX should start off with a statement "we are all about GOP and teabags" ...just in case any victim/viewer might think they are getting unbiased news. If Jon Stewart says he doesn't care who the stupid is and is a equal opportunity mocker then his show is unbiased ...even if the show happens to have more of the stupid on the GOP teabagger side. There's also a built in bias to all time slot controlled news programs. You can only fit so much or little news into 30 minutes. Who decides what that news is going to be? You can bet that NBC won't be having anti nuke shows or ABC having anti Mickey Mouse shows.

(9,463 posts)Amen to that! At the height of my "news" addiction I was consuming, quite literally mind you, 48-64 hours every week. From 9/11/01 until some time in 2011 I watched the news (never fox) every non-working and waking moment in the first few years, with very few exceptions. And for the last 6 years of that it was 64-72 hours per week as I began working at home.
I recognized it as addiction because having always been a news hound, I knew I was starting in 2001 from the base point of always having watched in anticipation of the next BIG breaking news story. The best analogy I can think of is the perception that all NASCAR fans are basically just waiting for the next BIG crash. Then, the more I listened to the pundits and developed favorites, and the more I was able to suss out the between-the-lines obfuscation, distraction, redirection, and down-right lies and propaganda, the more fascinated I became with how our society really works. That fascination only fed my addiction.
(While writing this post I realized I was five paragraphs in and that I was rambling and it was likely no one would read all of it, lol.) To make a long story short, at some point after a couple of big disappointments during President Obama's first term it just all go so exhausting. So, I now watch an hour in the morning (Thomas Roberts), and hour in the afternoon (Martin Bashir), and a hour in the evening (Stewart/Colbert). I get the rest of my truths from DU and a couple of other like-minded online venues. I also realized that I was either agreeing or disagreeing with pundits. However, I don't need them to do my thinking for me, so they became exhausting too. Except Joy-Ann Reid and a couple of others, who I still get to see mostly on Bashir.
Unless the Fairness Doctrine, journalistic integrity, truth and objectivity comes back to U.S. news, I'm not likely to relapse in my addiction to it.

(8,146 posts)strangely, possibly the most important leg a democracy stands on (the press) has always been a rightwing 'asset' and there aint much anyone can do about it. The revolution started in 1796, and was finally put down in 1980 with ronold regun election (which carter prolly won, btw)
we been defeated. hitler won dubia dubia 2 (whilst the greatest gen applauded see 'john wayne')
Within 10 years, we experience hurricanes that tear at both america and africa/europe at SAME TIME...the things weigh so much the coasts are flooded for hundreds of miles!
no one believes me, but i'm 62 yo and have watched the fascasti destroy representative democracy with such ease it make one suspect that this was what Jesus was warning us about the whole time! (lol)
-The rightwing supplied $$$ to hitler nazis in the late 1920's etc and saved them from bankrupcy (see prescot bush)
-The brit/americans murdered Trotsky in 1940 cus he was almost certain to end up teaching at an Ivy league school in USA (and that a no no for the bush league fascasti!) and blaming USSR was so friggin easy we still think Uncle Joe did the deed! (he hardly had time-the USSR was only 20 years old and imagine the rightwingers doing to USSR what they've since done to USA!!)
-Demonising the revolution, the USSR became vital to the rightwing's success, but hitler, a rightwing goof, went way too far, haddda be stopped and ww2 resulted...remember, Stalin outfoxed the fascasti by signing the pact with nazis buying 2 years time to get ready for war...
-roosevelt was murdered because he was not rightwing enough-the result was 'cold war' and iron curtain, with 'arms race' etc with USSR, which lost 20 million people and 1/3rd of its economy in ww2 and still defeated the nazis! The DDay landing was only 10 months before hitler dead, german surrender! Truman nuked Japan in august to scare USSR (but Stalin already had a working nuke, which stopped churchill/truman ie allies from attacking USSR (hundreds of western scientists/ military people tried help USSR survive, btw see 'klaus fuchs cambrige spies etc; you can still see the fascists trying to hide the facts..
The cold war/iron curtain were really open war against the revolution...'soviet' means 'worker'
Taiwan claimed legal authority over entire China, and the mess was only resolved by China nuclear might (forcing west to leave them alone though Korea Vietnam cost them untold billions $$)
-The ww2 era Bengal famine killed more people then the death camps in europe; the brits still ashamed about THAT!
-Japan had tried surrender when USA used nukes to murder vast numbers of innocents... see telagram from 'jap emperor' to Truman asking for immediate stop the war...
-Berlin was 300 miles inside East Germany when the city was partition by USSR! Cold war started in 1948.... USSR wanted to be part of marshal plan!
-USSR only one to recognise Israel at first...
-Pope JP 1st murdered by rightwing cus NOT rightwing enough replaced by JP 2nd ie Polish anti communist!
***
One could go on for long time, 911 was an inside job, as was JFK/RFK murder etc... and the fascasti can't stop because, well they have become pure evil and they dare not stop! A real free press would notice the obvious (that the oil industry sabatoged the electric car in the early days, for example, in interest of mass profits. The biggest tobacco firm, Phillip Morris, took over General Foods and kraft etc way back in 70's then gave up on tobacco after thousands died.... but same criminal mentality has made the people biggen fat an unhealthy! Viruses can be transmitted right into human brains via radio waves...$$$ billions spent SECRETLY subsidising rightwing media and movies etc
call me a skeptic, but maybe if there was a truthful news/info media, my paranoia would have less a basis!

(318 posts)the election which Carter lost by an enormous margin in the electoral college (reagan 489 electoral votes, carter 49?)
unless you mean something else entirely, I am just totally confused....

(8,146 posts)anything, literally anything, is possible.
As far as Carter, I can recall the last federal budget Carter submitted, and the howls of rightwing outrage at the $58 billion deficit. It was a feeding frenzy, with pigmedia saying Carter was ruining the US economy. Yet within 2 years, regan was running $200 billion deficits (he doubled natdebt in 8 years, from 1 trillion at end of Carter to 2.6 trillion in '88) and pigmedia said NADA! No wonder Carter lost.
USA as a nation has been hugely defrauded ...by traitors like bush and regan ie the reactionary rightwing
imho
