Silvio Berlusconi With A Trunk Full Of Tied-Up Women: Worst Ford Ad Ever?
JWT India created a series of disturbing ads for the FordFigo, one of which shows former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi flashing a peace sign from the front seat of a car that has three curvaceous women tied up and gagged in the trunk. Ford and JWT have both issued an apology.
Ford did not approve the ads; the agency was just publishing some speculative renderings to show off its creative chops. JWT India is Ford's agency for the Figo in that country.
India is known for its politically incorrect advertising Hitler shows up in ads there on a regular basis. It is possible that JWT India was trying to make a joke about Western culture rather than the role of women in society although either way it's tasteless. (If you click to expand the image, it's evident that the woman in the sexy schoolgirl outfit is crying.)
The tag line reads: "Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot," clearly referencing Berlusconi's many affairs and bunga bunga parties.

"For once, can we just talk about an OP without SOME (<---there, happy?) men getting all whiney and derailing the fucking thread? It's getting old."
The only posters I see getting whiney and derailing the thread are the usual contingent of self-proclaimed feminists - who, rather than commenting on the ad that is the topic of the OP, are busy discussing the motive of the man who posted it because they just KNOW what's inside his head - and that's because they all KNOW what "men" are up to at all times, and it's never anything good.

At Sun Mar 24, 2013, 02:03 PM an alert was sent on the following post:
Hate men much? So you think all men will like the ad. Seems sexist.

REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See <a href="http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=aboutus#communitystandards" target="_blank">Community Standards</a>.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
Nasty personal attack.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sun Mar 24, 2013, 02:12 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Considering what he was accused of and is replying to, I see nothing at all wrong with this reply.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Nasty? I don't think so, I've seen far worse, perhaps the alerter is attempting to use a jury to silence someone?
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Word! Straight up, honest reply to someone who consistently disrupts DU with a nasty attitude. We should all remember that as DU'ers we are here because we believe there can be a healthier, better world, and we must work together to make that happen. If you don't believe your fellow men on DU are better than the average perverts out in Real World, then you need to remove yourself and take your quest to the streets. Seriously.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Didn't find it any nastier than the complainant's posts in the tread.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: This reply was not the lease bit inappropriate given the sexist post it is in response to. That posters agenda is obvious and would not be allowed if the positions were reversed.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(110,159 posts)Summer Hathaway
(2,770 posts)there is no need to wait until a man actually says anything. They KNOW what all men think, what they do, how they react.
There is also no need for any man to state that he finds the ad in the OP NOT at all "cutsey (sic) and funny," because if he does, that contingent of women will accuse him of lying about his true feelings, while "pretending" to be concerned.
For some women, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, because they've already determined that all men are sexists who enjoy seeing women demeaned at every opportunity.
Note that I said "some" women. I, unlike some women here, believe qualifiers like "some", "a few", "a handful", "a certain amount of" is important. Not all women are alike; not all men are alike - a concept that seems beyond the ken of "some women" here.
seabeyond

Summer Hathaway
(2,770 posts)when you declared that the OP's motive was to "share a horrifying vile ad that men will think cutsey (sic) and funny"?
Not some men, or certain men, but "men". And please spare me the BS about how you need not qualify such declarations - you got caught, as you often do, lumping all men together as sexists who secretly enjoy seeing women demeaned and are merely "pretending" when they state otherwise.
I note that this same ad was posted in HoF - was the poster of that OP sharing it in order to be offensive? Why was her motive accepted as putting something out there to be discussed, while SS's motive was immediately deemed to be a desire to post something that "men will think cutsey (sic) and funny"?
I am not posting to "talk about feminists". I AM a feminist. What you refuse to accept, despite it being pointed out to you repeatedly on this board, is that your idea of feminism is not only NOT shared by real feminists, but is in fact seen as demonstrating the very sexism you decry.
Apparently, you believe that sexism towards women is heinous, while sexism towards men is not only acceptable, but should be engaged in whenever possible.

A print ad used to promote the Ford Figo compact car in India is causing controversy among people who say it is offensive, distasteful and misogynistic. Indeed, the pitch has drawn so much fire that Ford Motor Co. has apologized for it.
The ad features a caricature of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at the wheel of a Figo with three women bound and gagged in the cars cargo bay. The Figo is known for its luggage capacity and Fords tagline for the car is, Leave your worries behind with Figos extra-large boot.
We deeply regret this incident and agree with our agency partners that it should have never happened, Ford said in a statement. The posters are contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford and our agency partners.
The Berlusconi ad is one in a trio of similarly styled ads that serve as examples of how advertising can approach, push, and violate the limits of public acceptance.

(2,770 posts)humiliating Jews, blacks or gays, it would certainly have been posted here, and people would discuss their reactions to it and why they find it offensive.
Those kinds of things are posted here regularly as an invitation to discuss, share opinions, and even prompt emails/letters to the offending advertiser stating one's angry reaction in no uncertain terms.
But when someone posts anything that might be offensive to women, the poster's motive is ALWAYS (according to a certain contingent) an attempt to demean women, and is merely "pretending this is a legitimate 'discussion' he wants instead of the lighter fluid most of us know he always has handy."
Not only does that certain contingent have the ability to KNOW what is in a poster's mind, to KNOW what his motive is, and to KNOW when he is "pretending" something or not, they claim to KNOW those things because "men" are all alike.
It's highly amusing to watch a handful of women constantly railing about sexism, about men seeing women as a group and not as individuals, about the way "men" treat women - while engaging in all of the above when they talk about "men".

(10,751 posts)...it has convinced me that I will never, ever, buy a Ford. This is beyond the pale, it really is.
And people still wonder about "rape culture" and whether or not it exists.
Here it is in all its ugliness. And the fact that it was made for the Indian market just makes it worse, considering all of the rape stories coming out of India these days.
Rape culture exists, and it exists globally. This is just a particularly blatant example. Think about it: a highly paid ad agency actually came up with this idea. Their counterparts within Ford actually approved it. The ad agency then actually created the ad, Ford actually paid for it and submitted it to be run, and publishers actually agreed to run it and were paid to do so. IOW this is no anomaly, this is symptomatic of the kind of thinking that giggles at rape, that thinks Berloscuni was just being a manly man when he had his sex parties with (sometimes underage) prostitutes.
They can apologize until they are all blue in the face, it will not erase what they did with this ad.

(30,262 posts)...with an ad for a little urban coupe from Peugeot or Renault or someone that said, "If this car were a lady, it would get its bottom pinched." Someone vandalized the billboard with this graffiti: "If this lady were a car she would mow you down."
I think that sums it up nicely.

I hope they lose business over this, because THAT is unacceptable.

(33,224 posts)THERE'S NO REASON TO BOYCOTT FORD.
Ford and its ad agency issued apologies for a tasteless Ford Figo ad in which former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi is shown with a bunch of gagged and crying women in the trunk of his car that was never meant to see the light of day.
It turns out a young creative team at JWT India, Ford Figo's agency of record, made the spot and posted it to website Ads of the World without approval. (It has since been removed.)
Even though the ad never ran in paid media, once something's on the internet, the damage has been done.
WPP Group, which holds JWT, told Business Insider:
"We deeply regret the publishing of posters that were distasteful and contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within WPP Group. These were never intended for paid publication and should never have been created, let alone uploaded to the internet. This was the result of individuals acting without proper oversight and appropriate actions have been taken within the agency where they work to deal with the situation.

(65,616 posts)It says it right here;
"Ford did not approve the ads; the agency was just publishing some speculative renderings to show off its creative chops. JWT India is Ford's agency for the Figo in that country."
They showed off their creative shops. Without proper oversight. NSFW.
To say Ford did not pay for the ad, well yes in that part of the world they did.

If the women were terrified, and not hypersexualized, that would be realistic.
This? This is not reality.

A car with a three body trunk is necessary if you're doing wet work for the Sopranos.

(48,121 posts)I can't see how this would get anyone to want to buy a car from them.
Now, on the other hand, I can see how it (much like PETA's ads) could generate a lot of publicity for Ford.
But not all publicity is good and makes people want to try your product.
Sadly, this thread on their stupid ad has went a little nuts.
