1,600 students expelled in Bihar for cheating

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-21855609#.UU0yNKNnZq8.facebook
<snip>
More than 1,600 students have been expelled for cheating in school examinations in the northern Indian state of Bihar, officials say.

At least 100 parents were also briefly detained for helping their children cheat in the senior school exams.

Cheating in exams is fairly common in Bihar, but the number of students and teachers caught this time is unprecedented.

Officials said improved vigilance by teachers, police and surprise visits by "flying squads" of officials headed by area magistrates to examination centres were the main reasons why such a large number of students and parents were caught cheating.

Bihar is one of India's poorest states with a 64% literacy rate, one of the lowest in the country. India's literacy rate is 74%.

He said the parents were detained for passing on answers and other "study material" at the examination centres.

so I'm sure some entered medical schools. I've learned that cheating your way into college doesn't guarantee a graduate certificate.

6. Cheating is epidemic here as well, and just as in India, enforcement is mostly determined by status.

You would not believe some of the "honors graduates" that came through my office. They came from everywhere from the corporate diploma mills to the ivy leagues. People that, even though they hold a diploma in a specific discipline, lacked any understanding of the most basic principles their degree claims.

Most of them prefer text messages to text books and course outlines are a waste of time since they google for everything - why read a course outline. Critical thinking - WTF is that??

given an 'F' for the course, if not expelled. It seems that now profs are simply not allowed to actually grade anybody that has come up with tuition.

a University is simultaneously graduating great potential innovators and these frauds. Do they have an asterisk on their diplomas, somewhere?
