http://www.businessinsider.com/top-conservatives-promise-defcon-6-if-the-supreme-court-overturns-californias-gay-marriage-ban-2013-3As the Supreme Court weighs the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage, advocates on both sides of the issue are looking to the justices' ruling to determine whether the issue remains at the forefront of political and cultural debate particularly within the Republican Party.
If the court rules to overturn Proposition 8, conservative opponents of same-sex marriage argue that the issue will move to the center of Republican political discourse, in much the same way that Roe vs. Wade and abortion became the party's defining wedge issue in the 1980s and '90s.
"It strikes me that what we have right now is exactly what the genius of our federal system was designed to provide a broad range of local solutions and arrangements to what is a contentious issue," said evangelical operative Ralph Reed, who leads the Faith and Freedom Coalition.
"If the court were to go to the most extreme case and strike down 41 state laws defining marriage as between a man and a woman by an act of judicial fiat, I think it will further polarize our politics, it will undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, and it will likely spark a marriage equivalent of the pro-life movement that will spend decades trying to reverse the decision," Reed said.

(38,958 posts)If they want DefCon 6 I think that would be superb! As it again shows a clear lack of understanding of the words they use.

They're not talking about DEFense CONdition 6.
They're talking about DEFecation CONtrol 6, which is their latest desperate strategy to keep from shitting themselves after this idiotic ban is thrown out.

(24,461 posts)The writings of Iron-age shepherds, clerics and nomads have no bearing or precedent in 2013. This shouldn't even be up for debate. This should not even be an issue.
It's going to be a great day when dominionist fundamentalpatient white males lose their last stitch of societal control and are relegated to the dust-heap of a bigoted and vile history.

(14,040 posts)The US Supreme Court can overturn that ruling and it would give conservaidiots what they want... so they really want the US Supreme Court to overturn the CA Supreme Court ruling.
However, from the sounds of things yesterday, it seems as though they aren't going to rule at all, stating the people who brought the case (those against marriage equality) had no right to bring the case.

How about if something like vote YES for gay rights

(11,175 posts)For purposes of raising money, mobilizing people, being a Republican kingmaker, etc., he can embrace a cause that most Americans reject. If Republican politicians in swing districts lose general elections as a result, that's not his problem. He's not running for office.
I'm sure there are quite a few Republican politicians who are publicly against marriage equality but who are privately hoping for a ruling in favor of it. If the Court upholds Prop 8, then those politicians remain as targets for people who want to achieve marriage equality legislatively. If the Court announces a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage, on the other hand, then those advocates will have much less interest in punishing the politicians who would have voted against equality if it were up for a vote. It's hard to mobilize people on a hypothetical. The actual same-sex marriages won't be hypothetical, though, and the religious bigots will respond to strident calls to overturn the ruling.
The analogy to Roe v. Wade is a pretty good one. The decision has been a political boon to the politicians who denounce it, because it's helped them get 99%ers to vote against their own economic interests.
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)who fight against their own interests, and mine and yours while they're at it. I just think that there's been a marked sea change in the last few years in terms of views about marriage equality. For the first time polls show a majority of Americans support same-sex marriage. I think the tide is turning in other ways as well. Cannabis legalization is another issue that has flip-flopped.
Before Reagan brought in the religious nutjobs into his 1980 campaign these guys were considered fringe. Certainly no one took them seriously. Reagan gave them legitimacy by bringing them into the Republican fold thinking he needed them to beat Carter. As it turns out he really didn't need them but no one knew that at the time. Fast forward 30 years and they've become a weight around the neck of the G.O.P. who can no longer control them. The result is that the G.O.P. is seriously split. If they keep the evangelical nutjobs the mainstream conservatives will bail, taking their $billions with them. If they reject the the evangelicals, the evangelicals will very likely will split off from the Republicans and start their own party which, again, weakens the G.O.P. Either way the opposition is in tatters. Yeah, they'll use marriage equality as a wedge issue just as they have Roe, but Roe is still the law of the land and even the party bosses know it will never be overturned. They use it as a carrot to get the brainless to open their meager little wallets.
Think about it, Faux News ratings are tanking. Rush is being subsidized by big money. Hate radio is on the decline. The Teahadidist candidate losses were almost 100%. They overreached with their bigotry against, well, everything that isn't white, straight, male and protestant, and turned people off to their message. Imho, which is worth exactly what you paid for it, this country is FINALLY moving left again.
Now, if we can just get rid of the ^&%$$^ Blue Dogs which are about as useful as mammaries on a bull, maybe this country can think about finally moving into the 21st century.
Anyway, just my two cents.

(10,942 posts)Blacks support gay rights now. Hispanics support gay rights now. Young people support gay rights. The people that fought abortion rights are dying off. The right-wing may restrict abortion in small, rural states, but they have as much chance as a snowball surviving in hell at getting abortion rights overturned in highly populated states, where most Americans live.
